Teresa, I probably expected Nine Tailors to be too much like Christie. I tend to make that kind of mistake with expectations.
Porua, I can never enjoy the blood-and-guts type murder stories now because of my Christie upbringing.
Amy, I will check out Strong Poison some time this, er, ... ... sympathizes with the unhelpful neighbors, saying how Christian feelings really can break up one's domestic peace. LOL!
The Nine Tailors was my first Sayers too. She definitely got very technical and involved, and it's very leisurely (very different from Christie, who gets right down to it). ... Teresa, I tried Nine Tailors as my first Sayers, and was turned off. I've read since that it's not a good one to start with. I intend to try again some time. Sense and sensibility by Jane Austen, when I need to escape to a quieter world, full of subtlety ... #262 dihiba
I think The Nine Tailors is one of those books that you either love or can't get through. Gaudy Night is my favorite (I love mysteries set in schools and I love Oxford!) but Nine Tailors is a very close second for me. But then, I like them all--although The Five Red Herrings ... The Nine Tailors is my favourite Sayers! I haven't enjoyed the other three or four I read nearly as much. #260
I agree. someone who is looking for a mystery might be disappointed with Nine Tailors if they weren't already a Peter Wimsey fan. Unless, of course, they were really into bell ringing! :-D I like The Nine Tailors, but would hesitate to recommend it as a "first" Sayers, personally - have lent it to a couple of friends who haven't really enjoyed it (and I think they are the sort of people who ought to like Sayers!!). ... also one of my favorites and it is somewhat drawn from Sayers young life as a Parson's daughter in an area similar to where Nine Tailors is set. In some ways I consider this a novel that includes a mystery rather than a "mystery novel." It is also a good "stand alone" novel. I don't think I read the Wimsey books in any kind of order, but my favorite is The Nine Tailors. The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers ... Treasure Island by RL Stevenson. Can't believe I never read this before. This was a very fun category.

The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers ... Heck, if Harriet hadn't had an illicit relationship with Philip Boyes, she'd never have met Peter! There's bigamy in The Nine Tailors, a suggestion of lesbianism in Unnatural Death, repressed sexuality in The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, etc., etc.

There is also an enjoyable collection of short stories, but I would read a few ... ... way too many books on the go right now, but as for mysteries, I'm reading Messenger of Truth (the latest Maisie Dobbs), The Nine Tailors (which I'm having a bit of trouble getting into - I love it, but there's a lot of time devoted to bell-ringing!), and Killing the Shadows.

Don't know if any of you are keeping up with this group, but I would love to be a part of it. The Nine Tailors is high on my list of non-Harriet books, but I must stick with the first, Strong Poison for my Harriet books. Sets the stage, so to speak.
LibraryThing is going to make me more ... I tend to think of Murder Must Advertise as being in the middle, neither early nor late. My husband loves The Nine Tailors but it's probably not for everyone.
Dick Francis: try High Stakes, Enquiry. and Risk. ... you in the British/Irish Crime group as well.
Busman's Honeymoon and Gaudy Night are my favorites as well, though The Nine Tailors and Murder must Advertise are my favorite non-Harriet novels. ... a lot, though, especially the diary entries and letters at the beginning. My favorite without Harriet is probably The Nine Tailors.
Has anyone read The Seven Deadly Sins in the Work of Dorothy L. Sayers, by Janice Brown? A very interesting perspective on her work.
