Atonement redux. I read this book shortly after it was published, and just didn't understand all the gushing praise for it. So, thinking I should give it another try, I did. I still didn't really enjoy it. It reminded me of my feelings about The Voyage Out. The writing is masterful, but I just ...

Just finished Atonement and Dirk Gently's Holistice Detective Agency. I have started Herzog and then am going to move onto Frankenstein.
Two that come to mind.. Atonement was an amazing read.

I did read the book Atonement , the first I read by Ian McEwan, and, so far, by far the best. Although Saturday may be the only other that I have read, so perhaps that isn't saying too much. I think the movie was definitely true in spirit to the book, except at one point at the end. And, I'm ...

Add me to the list of folks having a hard time with Atonement . I got about 90 pages into it and set it aside. Ho hum. I might get back to it and try again one of these days, but right now I've got too many good books on the TBR pile waiting to be read.
I had some difficulty with Atonement as well (mainly that I really hated that little snot Briony), and I'm not a big fan of the early McEwans with their graphic violence and kinky sex (First Love, Last Rites, The Cement Garden, or The Comfort of Strangers). As to The Child in Time, I ...

The jury is still out for me regarding McEwan. I loved Saturday then one of the few who really disliked Atonement . So I'm adding The Child in Time to my Wish List just to see how I lean towards it.

Oh, I really enjoyed Black Dogs - not up to Atonement , but I thought it was a good short novel. Amsterdam, now, left me really disappointed.
The Hero's Walk looks great though!
*66–68 I'd not made the connection between The Blind Assassin and Atonement , but I read the books years apart. Now that you mention it, I'm intrigued. I'll have to read Margaret Atwood's book again. I read the other one recently.

Did anyone else feel like the Blind Assassin was very similar to Atonement ? The era, the role of fiction, the duplicitous characters, the relationship of sisters - I thought these two books were oddly synchronous. Possibly it is all in my head.

17. Atonement by Ian McEwan
I absolutely loved this book, the story, the way it was told, and the way it was written. I'm impressed at how precise the movie is with the book.

Atonement is one of my favourite books, but when it comes to McEwan I think it's all downhill from here. Perhaps I'm the only one who feels that way but I'm always afraid of trying new books by the same author when I really loved one book. Enduring Love was a serious disappointment.

For me it was Wide Sargasso Sea, which I read because I love Jane Eyre. It just wasn't happening for me. Atonement got off to an amazing start, but then became rather predictable and I had to skim through the rest. Surfacing, also, was a let down. I have read and loved most Atwood novels, ...

Petermc - Atonement is amazing - absolutely the best book I read in 2008! It is too bad that you saw the movie already, since the ending is one of the best parts of the book, IMHO, but I would still definitely read it.
On Atonement - just saw the movie for the first time last night and quite enjoyed it. Have heard opposing opinions - better than the book and worse than the book! Based on these glowing reviews I might have to give this author a chance in print and find out for myself.

I really loved Saturday, but hated Atonement . If you want to read another McEwan gem, try On Chesil Beach. Very short. Very precise.
Love your list.

... book is usually better. And there are a few cases where the movie is just as good, if not better, than the book itself. Atonement and the Lord of the Rings saga are a couple examples. (I know the LotR books are absolute classics, but I've never been able to enjoy the books...I'm not a big ...
I read Atonement before I saw the movie, and I think it enhanced my enjoyment of the movie as much of the novel is concerned with inner thoughts of characters which are not apparent in the movie.

I had noticed that about Atonement , which made me really curious, so I decided to check it out for myself. I haven't seen the movie yet, do you think that will be an advantage?

Although it may not seem so at first, Atonement has become a very controversial book, at least to us LT-ers! We seem to be split down the middle in terms of whether we liked it or not. I personally LOVED Atonement , so I highly recommend you keep reading! It gets a bit slow in ...
I started Atonement last night, just a tiny bit. I'm curious what all the fuss is about. I have to say, I loved the first couple of pages.
Just started Atonement last night.
Not Atonement - this headache is more consuming than incapacitating
Is it Atonement ? The mother, Emily, always got terrible, incapacitating migraines.
I agree, flipflopgirl, about Atonement . Took lots of concentration to get through, but at least had an ending that was, in my opinion, a great payoff.

Wow, Morphidae, that's definitely a "first page horror". I couldn't even finish it.
I didn't give up on Atonement . I'm glad I didn't, as it was an ok book, but I don't think I'll pick up any other McEwan books any time soon.
Finished Atonement last night. I think this book took me over three weeks to read. I wasn't crazy about the author's writing style or character development, and many sections seemed forced. It's an ok book, and I'll probably watch the movie, but I don't want to read anything else by McEwan for a ...
Finally, finally, finally finished Atonement . I thought the beginning was very slow and forced. It focused mostly on the younger girl's thoughts on being a writer, and I felt that it was just an outlet for the author to express his own thoughts. Once the novel got going, though, it was better. I'l ...

46) Saturday by Ian McEwan--Didn't connect with it as much as with Black Dogs, but it's just about tied with Atonement as my second-favorite McEwan novel. I gather it's a post-9/11 novel in that he describes the new "mood" of the world, but I didn't really notice that very much (possibly as ...

Just thought I'd throw in my .02 regarding Atonement . All I heard was how fantastic the book was, I couldn't wait to read it. It did start slow, then something exciting happened, then, well, sort of slow again. I thought the book was ok, definitely a let down from what I was expecting. I ...

Good luck.
I've read six McEwan books, and they've all been really different from each other. I think Atonement is the most different of all, and indeed is very different from Enduring Love (great book, by the way. I read it in one day while on holidays last winter).
After Atonement , I don't know if I could bring myself to read anymore of McEwan's books
I've put Atonement aside for a while, so I picked up Watchmen. The trailer I saw before The Dark Knight prompted me to read it, and even though I know I've read it before, I can't remember when, and all the details are hazy, so I'm having a great time rediscovering it. I'm not sure if I'l ...

... (and yes, curious about what the film adaptation of The Road will bring), but I was a bit bewildered by your comment on Atonement --I haven't seen the movie, but the book left me feeling pretty cold, while The Road affects me every time (I teach it in my lit. class, so I've read it over ...

My vocab list .
It started out with anodyne in Atonement (anything that relieves distress or pain) - which I just realized is not on my vocab list. Hmm, time to update.
... Just started Beekeepers Apprentice by Laurie R King. A mystery I am so far really enjoying.
I also just finished Atonement , was really looking forward to it, as I wanted to read it for so long, then the hype and movie (which I haven't seen yet) and well, was kind of let down. It was ...
... Enduring Love but somehow I always get caught up in something else every time that I want to see the movie.
As for Atonement , the movie, I really liked it. However, I feel that I would have liked it better had I not read the book because for me I feel like the surprise can only surprise ...
... I am physically unable to go into a bookstore without buying any books (I've spoken to my doctor, no cure), I came out with Atonement . I'm pleased b/c there are no movie stars on the cover.

#81 I read Atonement before seeing the movie, and I was angry through most of it, too. I love McEwan, but this one is not a favorite with me. I think I will give it another try in a ...
Am reading Atonement - not because I want to, but a friend lent it to me last week and I always feel obligated to read borrowed books as quickly as I can. I have been avoiding this book as I usually do with current 'in' books. For some reason I have an aversion to books with a lot of buzz - at ...
#44 "Atonement" by Ian McEwan
Astonishing and overwhelming. My reviewing skills are totally not up to the task. So I'll just offer some quick impressions and an exhortation to read the book and experience it:
The theme: "consequences of a simple act extending over an entire lifetime" ...
#4 "Just finishing up The Darkest Evening of the Year, I have less than 100 pages to go. Then I'm picking up Atonement , then The Giver by Lois Lowery, and after that Eragon and Eldest in that order. "

... it as much as some other readers here, but I wouldn't qualify it as a must read by any stretch. I'll also add McEwan's Atonement --this is one I see no need to Ever go back to OR recommend, certainly not a must-read.
I haven't read all of the Ian McEwan books on the list, but I know I was disappointed with Atonement after all I heard about it; regardless of which ones stay, I don't really see any reason to include 8 books by one author--to me, that just speaks to him being a personal favorite of the editor(s).
... the 75 book challenge!
I have Enduring Love and Shopgirl in my TBR pile. What did you think of them? I really enjoyed Atonement and I wanted to read another of Mcewan's books and a friend said he really liked Enduring Love, so I am thinking of giving it a read soon.
I never read Sons ...
Oh well--we all have those; mine is Atonement --so many people love it (and people I know even teach it), but I just, as you said, don't get it. :)
I have Snow Flower and the Secret Fan on my TBR pile, and I read Atonement earlier this week. I thought Atonement was a bit slow-going and Briony was the only thing about the book that I liked, but it's stuck with me for quite awhile. The only pointer I could give with Atonement is take ...
... Snow Flower and the Secret Fan it was my selection last year for my book club. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Atonement is in my TBR pile--I seeing mixed reviews on that one. I hope I enjoy it.
I'm new here and found this post. It sounds like such a great idea. I've never actually kept track of how many books I read a year, so this should be a fun challenge.
I also "borrowed" the idea of why I chose a book from another reader because I don't always have a lot to say about the books a I ...
It is so good to hear someone on LT state my feelings on Atonement --it seems we had the same reaction, but even when I ask why others love it so much, and they attempt to tell me, I only end up shaking my head. FINISHED Atonement THANK GOD! bored to tears by that one... Honestly, why is it on the 1001 list? I really can't see it. It's not that clever. I had the "mystery" all figured out from the 200th page (200th because it took McEwan 200 pages to GET TO the mystery of who violated Lola.) Geez... ...
#33 trinah I'm also reading Atonement right now, and am halfway through. I'm getting ready to start Part Two after Easter service and dinner. What do you think of it so far? It takes about 150 pages to get going, but it's now really good. If it hadn't been for Briony, I might have ...

I don't read a whole lot of any one author, so I'm gonna make mine a book-to-book as well. Right now I'm reading Atonement and I'd have to say, If you like that you'd love Tess of the d'Urbervilles. It feels so much like Tess... McEwan feels the need to describe every blade of ...
Usually have more than one going at a time, though focused on one main one. Right now I'm reading Atonement as my main book. But I'm also reading Skeleton Crew while out and about (it fit better in my pocket than The Darkest Evening of the Year did, and short stories are great for waiting ...

... I liked it, though I have no idea why I liked it. All I know is that I wanted to keep reading until I was finished. I like Atonement better, but that's just my taste.
Reading a bit of fluff right now (fluff=NOT list material). But next up for me is Memoirs of a Geisha.
Just finishing up The Darkest Evening of the Year, I have less than 100 pages to go. Then I'm picking up Atonement , then The Giver by Lois Lowery, and after that Eragon and Eldest in that order.

I don't think Saturday is his greatest book, and it certainly isn't his most accessible. I would recommend either Atonement or Enduring Love as a better example of McEwan at his best.
Thanks 45 & 46!! That makes me excited to read them both. I loved Atonement and am eagerly trying to finish the book I'm reading now to get to more of his work.

I found Atonement very different from the other McEwan novels that I've read. I think that BetsyT in post #2 captures it quite well that he was trying to capture a sense of time and place. I found that the first half of the book reminded me of Virginia Woolf or Elizabeth Bowen, and for me ...

#88 icantmakeme, Although I wouldn't have said it as dramatically as you did, I too found the ending of Atonement extremely annoying.
WARNING: SPOILERS and run-on sentences of rant to follow…
Atonement by Ian McEwan was a fantastic read until the end when it devolved into a literary w*nk. It did this by taking the view point back to the most frustrating character in the whole book who had grown up to be a really ...

After quietly stumbling upon Atonement a couple of summers back, I went on a Ian McEwan bender that took me through 6 of his novels, half a short story collection, and a number of his essays. I'll try to focus on just two of his books, The Innocent and Enduring Love, but I'll probably be ...
... & Zooey stories, though. In those, the male characters were more mature, and Franny was the confused adolescent. In Atonement , Briony was self-involved in a very authentically female way. Reading the book made me remember all the painful awkwardness of my own teenage years. Quite an ...
... unless I can find something sympathetic about the protagonist, there's no way I'm enjoying the book. For instance, I loved Atonement because even though Briony was one of the most self-involved, self-important, destructive characters ever, there was something to connect to and be sympathetic ...
#7 Hazelk - It's a while since reading Atonement but reading your views on, I think you are very perceptive about Briony and the storyteller/novelist in her. When I read the book I wondered where exactly story/truth/reality/memory exactly started, especially bearing in mind the book is a novel, ...
I'll be borrowing Atonement by Ian McEwan from my mate, Suzie, at some point this month, as it's the group read for The Posh Club for April. Other than that, I have no hard and fast plans for specific books this month - it all depends on what I feel like reading when I finish The Tea Rose ...
I finished Spies by Michael Frayn. It was very much in the mold of Atonement by Ian McEwan and especially The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley, wherein children misinterpret the actions of adults, and adults fail to grasp what the children do and don't understand, the actions of the ...

When I first read this book, my immediate reaction was a slight disappointment because Enduring love and Atonement were so satisfyingly absorbing and lent themselves to immediate discussion. Saturday has been the book I've thought about and then discussed and then thought ...

Jhowell - thats funny because I am also now reading Saturday - I enjoyed Atonement and finished it quickly - the stories of the war wounds was gripping - but I guess I was waiting for more to happen than did - and the ending put a small twist on the book which I liked
... a lot of the symbolism of the book escaped me though - the plot was a little bit complicated at times

I would vote for Atonement by Ian McEwan, A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, and I would definately second the vote for Disgrace.

... years ago in college; maybe I'll reread that for my winter break. There are some resonances there, aren't there?
I think Atonement is clearly fiction, but it's certainly striving for truth. As to how much is fact and how much is fiction, McEwan acknowledges his sources for historical detail (W ...
Just in case: ***SPOILERS***
Finished Atonement and although it's not going on my All Time Favorites shelf, I am glad I've read it and I can imagine reading it again. I had no trouble with the switch at the end to first person; there were plenty of embedded references to Briony's future as a ...
Having been intrigued by the diversity of opinions over at the Best Endings thread, I'm reading McEwen's Atonement and finding it engrossing.
Also finished a Calvin and Hobbes collection for the much needed laughs.
*6 Yes - the ending of Atonement is staggeringly good. It's debatable where the "story" starts and what is true or not true, fiction or not fiction. Indeed, what is fiction? Because of this aspect, the current fuss about whether he plagiarised or not, is rendered irrelevent in my view. But I ...
Just shows how tastes differ, LouisBranning, I loved Atonement up until the ending and then I felt totally cheated and deceived.
Agree, lizzier, about McEwan's Enduring Love codicil, but think the ending to Atonement was as astonishing and as powerful as any I've ever read.
... current century I'd have to say Ian McEwan, eminently readable without being trite. Certain scenes in Enduring Love and Atonement gave me real frissons. I also admire Nick Hornby: I latched on to Fever Pitch as soon as it came out and not just because I support AFC.

... use of language. I also thought that the structure of Saturday was perfect. That said, I can see why one might prefer Atonement which was more free in language and setting. Too hard Hazel.
Amandameale, regarding McEwan, did you prefer Atonement or his later Saturday? I'm a fan of him, too, and think my vote is for the former.
Someone mentioned Atonement in the "positive representations" thread.
I really loved the book (and am glad I read it before "Saturday," which was a big bloody bore). I thought McEwan did a creditable job getting into a female head.

I really want to know why critics love literary fiction so much. After reading Atonement , another prize winner, I wanted to throw it against the wall. What was the point of it?
Leave Saturday on the shelf. What a huge disappointment after the brilliant Atonement . Saturday is a prime example of what happens when the editor becomes a sycophant to an author's reputation.
