Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness, the third volume in Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series, continues from volume two with Scott’s ex Envy Adams back in town. Scott’s relationship continues to develop with Ramona Flowers, including having to fight her evil exes. One of them, Todd Ingram, is currently dating Envy while also cheating on her with Lynette Guycot. Scott’s bandmate Neil, a former roommate of Envy’s from when she lived in Toronto, now wants to preserve her connection to Envy in order to seem cool. Knives, Scott’s most recent ex-girlfriend, continues in her rebound with Young Neil. Wendell and Ramona strike up an unlikely friendship based on their mutual hatred of Envy, while flashbacks establish more about Wendell and Scott’s friendship. Stacy, Scott’s sister, also develops a friendship with Ramona. Scott and Todd have a series of skirmishes leading up to their final battle as Scott tries to clear the air with Envy and Knives. Kim, Scott’s other bandmate and yet another of his ex-girlfriends, deals with her own loneliness, but begins to make friends with some of the other characters in Scott’s life. Unlike in the film, Ramona battles Envy with her hammer and Scott disables Envy by touching the back of Envy’s knee. This volume also further develops the references to Gideon Graves. As a bonus, this volume includes material from O’Malley’s friends Nathan Avery, Josh Lesnick Alex Ahad, Andy Helms, John Allison, and David McGuire offering their interpretations of the characters.
