None. Introduces different songs that different birds make, birdsong counting down from 10. Hard to count and make the noise at the same time. Excellent though because it goes beyond tweet and chirp. ( )ELIB 530A – LibraryThing Part B – Beginning Book /Counting book 1 This book is basically a back-wards counting book for the numbers 10-1. The reader is taken from dawn through evening listening and viewing backyard birds. It begins at dawn with a woodpecker pecking 10 times on a tree. Each turn of the page brings a new bird and it’s song that is called out, one call less than the previous bird. A humming bird makes 1 tiny sound towards the end of the book. That call is not the end of the book however. After all has settled down for the quiet sleeping evening, a mockingbird begins to mimic each of the birds’ calls of the day. Steve Jenkins handmade art paper collages beautifully render the backyard habitat and detailed birds with a strong depth of perspective. He has selected each piece of paper with an eye toward its values and placed each so that it gives the illusion of 3 dimensions. Color, shape and texture are used likewise, for variety in sharp edged close contour to lightly feathered pieces used for atmospheric effect. This Caldecott Honor book provides its readers with lively interactivity in text and a path through a vibrant day in the backyard with a beautiful variety of birds. This is a great picture book that tells the sounds that different birds make ending with the mockingbird which imitates all the other birds. Plus the sounds are counted down from 10 to 1 so it reviews the numbers too. The illustrations look like pieces of paper cut into shapes and glued together, it looks very beautiful. Quote: A short rain shower. Dressed in shiny green suits, mallards in the creek discuss the weather. "The Gull was right," they say, quacking 5 times in agreement. no reviews | add a review
