That crazy man. ( )

I liked this book for the number of photos it had, but I thought "Endurance--Shakletons Incredible Voyage" by Alfred Lansing a better written book. ( )

Great story of explorer trapped in Antarctic ice who goes on to save all his crew. ( )

To have such a complete photographic, as well as written, record of such an adventureous expedition as this, begun in 1914 is just amazing to me! Ms. Alexander does a wonderful job of staying out of the way and letting the story tell itself, while her occasional guidance and expert chronology making this easy reading indeed! This is the kind of book that awakens the adventurer in us all! ( )

An absolutely fascinating account of the plight of the Endurance and her crew in their quest to reach the South Pole. The photographs are incredible and the cast of characters equally so. The fact that these men were stranded in Antarctica for months yet suffered not a single lost life is practically unbelievable. Shackleton's leadership was on clear display as he held together a rough band of men through the most difficult ordeal imaginable. A highly recommended read. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Amazon.com Audiobook Review (ISBN 0375404031, Hardcover)

Narrators Michael Tezla and Martin Ruben join forces to read Caroline Alexander's extraordinary account of Sir Ernest Shackleton's improbable Antarctic adventure. Tezla narrates the text while Ruben reads diary entries from the ship's crewmembers, employing a variety of native accents. The approach effectively divides the book into listener-friendly chunks, but at times, keeping track of all 27 crewmen requires the fortitude of the explorers themselves. Tezla describes the ice and snow with a haunting beauty but manages maintain the tension throughout, while Ruben injects character and humor into his various vocal interpretations.
