Fiction. Literature. HTML:From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and "multilayered tale of small-town intrigue" (Glamour) about a prep schoolteacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.
Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him.

A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past. Once a teacher at a girls prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart.

But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secretsâ??and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation. Finally a Jodi Picoult book I could love! Romance, mystery, courtroom, suspense, last page twist! To me her others have been too sad and too slow. This one I almost gave five stars. ( )

Jack is a teacher and soccer coach at a girls school. One of the girls accuses him of an imagined sexual relationship. Jack takes a plea deal to return to society. He moves to Salem Falls to start over. The small town gets wind of Jack's past and the nightmare starts over again when a teenager accuses him of rape. ( )

Another one that grabbed me from the beginning and really made me think about someone who is not guilty and has to pay the time for the crime anyway. It ended with a bit of a surprise.....I'm surprised but not surprised at the same time. I also think it ended a bit abruptly. I wanted some loose ends tied up a bit more. ( )

So many characters at the beginning that it was confusing. Also the changing from past and present dragged the story longer. The concept of charging someone of rape when they did not do it was an interesting storyline. Enjoyed the interaction between Addie as a former rape victim and Jack. Jack as a coach was an OK guy and that part of the story was believable. Did not understand some of the flash backs in his past with his mother about why they were added. The ending for Gillian and her father did not follow the story of people learning from their past. ( )
