Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s Crooked River, the 19th book featuring FBI Agent Pendergast, begins with the discovery of hundreds of feet in shoes on the shore of Sanibel Island, Florida. Pendergast’s superior, Assistant Director in Charge Pickett, interrupts Pedergast’s vacation following the Broken Hearts case to have him join the task force investigating the mysterious appearance of the feet. Pendergast quickly finds that the Coast Guard has its own agenda in running the investigation, so he pursues a different tack, uncovering a vast conspiracy. Agent Armstrong Coldmoon rejoins Pendergast, albeit reluctantly given all that he went through on the Broken Hearts case, while Constance Green finds another mystery in the house she and Pendergast rent on Sanibel Island. Like Verses for the Dead before it, this standalone novel demonstrates why Pendergast remains such a compelling character while also setting up future narrative possibilities in Savannah, Georgia. As usual another example of a fast paced and action packed thriller. This Pendergast novel included much more action involvement by Constance Greene and the continuing presence of Agent Coldmoon. A rollicking thrill ride - rather violent and bloody - but a good ride nonetheless. ( )

Compelling story line with a mystery that kept me turning pages to see why shoes with severed feet in them wash up on Captiva Island. Characters besides Pendergast include his ward Constance (who is chasing her own mystery), agent Coldmoon and the offbeat reporter Smithback plus some interesting additions. Definitely a good read. Highly recommend. ( )

Mystery, action, suspense...another wonderful entry in the Pendergast series. It features FBI Special Agent Pendergast, his "partner" Special Agent Coldmoon (aka Lunafria), his ward Constance Greene and many special guests. With a bizarre scenario, plot twists, Guatemala, China, rogue military, the story will hold your interest and then some. ( )

A shoe complete with a severed foot inside is not what the average beachcomber is looking to find. To make matters worse the foot is not alone...soon more a hundred more bob up. Special Agent Pendergast teams up with the junior Special Agent Armstrong Coldmoon to investigate this strange phenomenon.. The source remains a mystery although Pendergast and Coldmoon come up with quirky ideas... but that isn't unusual for Pendergast. "Quirky" is a good word as any to use to describe this story as well as this entire series. There is plenty of suspense... but readers be warned that the action gets bloody. It's a great addition to this series that never becomes dull even after nearly 20 books. ( )

Book description
A STARTLING CRIME WITH DOZENS OF VICTIMS.

Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island, Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide and are washed up on the tropical beach--each one with a crudely severed human foot inside.

A GHASTLY ENIGMA WITH NO APPARENT SOLUTION.

Called away from vacation elsewhere in the state, Agent Pendergast reluctantly agrees to visit the crime scene--and, despite himself, is quickly drawn in by the incomprehensible puzzle. An early pathology report only adds to the mystery. With an ocean of possibilities confronting the investigation, no one is sure what happened, why, or from where the feet originated. And they desperately need to know: are the victims still alive?

A WORTHY CHALLENGE FOR A BRILLIANT MIND.

In short order, Pendergast finds himself facing the most complex and inexplicable challenge of his career: a tangled thread of evidence that spans seas and traverses continents, connected to one of the most baffling mysteries in modern medical science. Through shocking twists and turns, all trails lead back to a powerful adversary with a sadistic agenda and who--in a cruel irony--ultimately sees in Pendergast the ideal subject for their malevolent research.
