Though not technically an explorer, Ida Pfeiffer was a serious traveller. after having survived an unhappy marriage, and married off her sons to responsible females, she set off on an oft-deferred trip around the world. She did that, and then did it again. The rest of her life was filled with writing up her various voyages and making more of them. This selection from her first book leaves one feeling richer from having encountered a person not easily deterred by circumstance. ( )
