Superdupes fight Nazis. Betrayal, sacrifice, victory. Good low-brow fun. ( )

I loved the book. Also, it's very rare for me to think a movie is even better, but I did in this case. ( )

2775 The Guns of Navarone, by Alistair MacLean (read 14 Aug 1995) This tells of Keith Mallory and four others being sent by the British in Cairo to take out huge guns the Germans have on the Greek island of Navarone. It is a lot like Where Eagles Dare (my favorite MacLean movie), complete to being captured by Germans and outwitting them. Extravagant, exuberant, the protagonists do fantastic things. It'd be fun to see the movie--I'm sure it would be as good as Where Eagles Dare. But since it is so like that book, I am not at all sure that it is necessary to read any more MacLean books. ( )

The match scratched noisily across the rusted metal of the corrugated iron shed, fizzled, then burst into a sputtering pool of light, the harsh sound and sudden brilliance alike strangely alien in the stillness of the desert night.
