Work detailsChicken Soup with Rice: A Book of Months by Maurice Sendak
None. This is a fun little book, mixing the months and seasons with chicken soup with rice. While I was a teacher, I remember getting this book and cassette tape from one of the student book clubs, and the tape had the story in song form, sung by Carole King. Rereading this book today, I could still hear Carole King singing the words. :) Fun illustrations too! You don't read this book. You sing it. Sendak's text is both amusing and amazing! A year ago Ming Ming could chant out most of the text if I remind her the name of each month. Around my vegetarian household it was Tofu soup with rice, but still beloved. We especially loved the Nutshell Library, which contained small copies of this and three other Sendak books. no reviews | add a review

An early Sendak, published in 1962, it is whimsical, lyrical and joyous. There is nothing of depth, it is simply a book of lovely illustrations that make the reader smile and harken back to happy days.
