Enough preaching. If you ARE going to write a program using C or C++ for Windows, this is the most important book you can have on the shelf. It is not for the gingerbread, it shows how to code fully functional Windows programs by hand. Seriously, Notepad, a commandline compiler and linker are all that is needed for any example in this or any other Petzold book I've yet read.
The IDE (Visual Studio) is there to help speed and simplify coding. This book will show you what happens behind the scenes and that can be invaluable when the IDE gets in the way of your plans. (
