(  ) polo9 | Oct 8, 2009 |  A much loved book, quite battered now, even though it has protection. Luckily I have another version with the stories it, at least, even if not the novels. Then there is always the version on the palm, so that one is never short of Holmes! This has all the canonical stories, and four longer novels, so it is all here when you need to search for a quote, or just pick a story to read at random. Most excellent mystery and adventure to be found. A woman? Smart as me? Crap. 5 out of 5 Bloodnut scammer bonanza. 4.5 out of 5 Cruel disguise. 3.5 out of 5 Bad blood between aussies turns violent. 4 out of 5 KKK's fruity message of terror leaves them with a really sinking feeling, in the washup. 4 out of 5 Undercover artist's opium den adventures lead to anxious wife. 4.5 out of 5 A bird that does jewellery, not gold, as Holmes puts the frighteners on. 3.5 out of 5 Sneaky snakey stuff. 5 out of 5 Secret commerce leads to deathtrap digit detachment. 4 out of 5 Marriage shenanigans keep Holmes occupied. 3.5 out of 5 Crown mishap. 4 out of 5 A governess has a hairy experience with a bizarre family. 5 out of 5 5 out of 5 This Sherlock Holmes volume has the awesome 'The Final Problem', with that dastardly evil supervillain Professor Moriarty being introduced, leading to the confrontation at Reichenbach Falls. This is one of the Sherlock Holmes stories that absolutely should not be missed. You also see Sherlock Holmes brother, the large Mycroft, in The Greek Interpreter, another must read. There is even a story there for the horse racing fans, with 'Silver Blaze'. More fantastic work. There is still the fun of The Sussex Vampire to be found, and the finger on the side of the nose style of The Illustrious Client to enjoy, and Holmes is still Holmes. If you can manage it, spring for the 12-volume Oxford edition -- also unlike this volume, the Oxford books are a convenient size for carrying and reading. This is an excellent book (i.e., a 5 on a 5 point scale), which is much more than I expect when I buy a book. Therefore, my objectivity is somewhat lacking. This contains all four novels: 'A Study in Scarlet', 'The Sign of the Four', 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' and 'The Valley of Fear'. And it also contains all 56 short stories (adventures). This is detective/mystery fiction with one central character (Sherlock Holmes, a consulting detective) and his biographer (Dr. Watson). There are some other recurring characters and themes. So of course, he got me an entire set of a book series I don't even like. im not a huge mystery person. its not my scene. sorry dad...thanks anyway. I tried and read a good amount.
