The basic events are similar to the first Civil War chapter, in which Spider-Man defects from Iron Man's government-sanctioned Avengers and joins Captain America's resistance. But there are some additional and more detailed bits, such as Spider-Man's co-opting a TV news show to announce and explain his defection, and his argument with Iron Man and Reed Richards over the use of the Negative Zone as a prison (very similar to our current use of Guantanomo as a prison for suspected terrorists). The book concludes with what Peter had most feared about outing himself as Spider-Man, as the Kingpin sends a hired assassin after him and his loved ones. This gets a higher rating than the first Civil War chapter, for the better artwork, writing, and impassioned moral turmoil that Peter Parker puts himself through over the decisions he has to make in this book. It's a major turn that the powers-that-be at Marvel have taken, and I hope they don't regret letting this particular genie out of the bottle. ( )no reviews | add a review
