Frankl gives a very impressive overview and application of logotherapy in this book, combining his experiences from the concentration camp at Auschwitz along with his clinical experiences with patients. I think his portrayal of sport psychology was spot on, that the more we compete with others will hinder us whereas the more we compete with ourselves, the more we will succeed. I found some peace from the section on love, that the people we have a hard time "getting over" is undeserving of the social scorn most people give it, and instead the attempt to transfer our love from one person (or ideal) onto another is an actual problem that leads to other problems, that the ones "hard to get over" are that way because of a psychological and spiritual connection and that indicates a less shallow relationship. There was emphasis on the role of responsibility as a necessary companion to freedom, but not as much as there had been in his other works. Nevertheless, he advocates taking responsibility for one's actions, be they good or bad. His ideas about "rescuing things into the past" is an interesting notion that I am still contemplating as I write this. There was a lot on de-reflection and paradoxical intention, some of which was repetitive. I liked how he talked about getting meaning from suffering, but that having meaning didn't necessitate suffering.. ( )
