The not-actually-licensed PI looks for a Midwestern innocent who went to New York and disappeared. Meanwhile, an acquaintance from AA dies in what police think is an accident but something doesn't fit. This wasn't as good as it gets, by any means, but Scudder is always good company. ( )A Matthew Scudder novel by Lawrence Block. It's very well-written in a spare style. Set in the streets of New York, it is very convincing in every element. The characters are fascinating (particularly Mickey Ballou), and the struggles by several of the characters with alcoholism and their reliance on Alcoholics Anonymous is very illuminating. In some ways and some scenes, the plot seems almost secondary, but all elements are woven together very tightly. A very satisfying mystery/crime novel. My first Matthew Scudder, but not my last. One of the best of Block's Matt Scudder series, it's also a terrific New York mystery, full of grit, energy, and suspense. no reviews | add a review

This is a city that seduces dreamers . . . then eats their dreams.
Matthew Scudder understands the futility of his search for a longtime missing Midwestern innocent who wanted to be an actress in the vast meat-grinder called New York City. But her frantic father heard that Schudder is the best—and now the ex-cop-turned-p.i. is scouring the hell called Hell's Kitchen looking for anything that might resemble a lead. And in this neighborhood of the lost, he's finding love—and death—in the worst possible places.
