An interesting memoir of the period in which Clissold helped with the building of China's industry with foreign funds and all the problems that arose. If I had been a business major I think I would have been more fascinated by the book. What fascinated me were the people, not the business. ( )

This is a fairly pedestrian young-man-goes-to-China memoir. It's nowhere near Iron and Silk, but it's not awful, either. ( )

This is a book I read because it was one assigned for a China book club I joined. I wasn't really interested in it as it is about doing business in China. Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0060761407, Paperback)

Mr. China tells the rollicking story of a young man who goes to China with the misguided notion that he will help bring the Chinese into the modern world, only to be schooled by the most resourceful and creative operators he would ever meet. Part memoir, part parable, Mr. China is one man's coming-of-age story where he learns to respect and admire the nation he sought to conquer.
