If you want to try one of the old Ellery Queen light-reading mysteries, pick this one. The Glass Village is the best because it has a quaint setting; an engaging, interesting plot; and it’s the most “highbrow” of these old books as well. While I wouldn’t exactly term it an allegory, it takes some political stands too (unlike the other Queen books). It comes out against McCarthyism, right-wing extremism and violence, and racism. I read about a million of these mystery novels in the mid-’70s, and this is the one that stands out. ( )
