4376. A Good Day's Work An Iowa Farm in the Great Depression, by Dwight W. Hoover (read 29 Oct 2007) This unpretentious account of the author's years on an Iowa farm near Dwight, Mahaska County, Iowa from his birth in 1926 till adulthood is an amazingly moving story for anyone who grew up, as I did, on an Iowa farm. I admit that every difference between his situation leaped to my attention, but there are a lot of similarities between his life and mine, even though we did not have sheep and we went in more for crops and sale of crops more than his father did. I found this a very poignant account, including his return to Iowa for his 50th high school class reunion in 1993. I do wish he had told more about his own life after he left the farm, but nevertheless I found this a compelling book, not soon to be forgotten. ( )
