2593 Empire on the Platte, by Richard Crabb (read 7 Apr 1994) This starts slow but is an excellent book, telling of the Olives of Texas who take longhorn cattle to the Platte Valley in Nebraska where they come into conflict with homesteaders, ending with Print Olive killing two of them. The book is carefully researched and is fascinatingly told. The jury found Olive guilty of second degree murder, but his conviction was overturned by the Nebraska Supreme Court in a case called Olive v. State, a 1880 case reported in 7 N.W. This book was a real sleeper, and I never expected I'd so enjoy it I wish I had read it before I went to that part of Nebraska a few years ago. It would have made ;the area so much more meaningful for me. ( )
