Roger Zelazny, especially The Chronicles of Amber
Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series Congratulations on reaching 500, Stasia! Quite an accomplishment.
I'm sorry you didn't like Barrayar more, but I understand. I think that much science fiction, that which is more than just an action story, at least, interacts with politics a lot. Its nature is to examine ourselves, or at least ... ...

The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold.
I am really shocked that no one else has said this yet?? The entire Vorkosigan Saga would be an excellent series of movies if a good writer/director could figure out how to work the inner dialogue prevalant in the books.. Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold ... It is actually a rather quick read--even when you stop to figure out the math "solutions".

I listened to an edition of Barrayar which had a man reading male parts and a woman reading female parts, which worked well until they forced that poor man to read a five-year-old boy's part. It was ludicrous. 44. Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold (sci fi) ****
I read this book in ebook format on my cell phone. This was the second book chronologically in the Miles Vorkosigan series, however it was not published in that order. This book takes off right where the first one, Shards of Honor ends. These ... ... omnibus ARE quick reads--they have great stories that move you along very quickly IMO. Finally finished Barrayar. Wow! Cordelia's Honor is the first novel I've ever read from Lois McMaster Bujold. I decided to go at the highly recommended Vorkosigan saga in chronological order beginning with Miles' parents. Amazing! Cordelia is one great heroine. I'm looking forward to getting to ... ... to set up the sequel. I guess it still remains to be seen as I am only now just starting the second half which is entitled Barrayar.
Cordelia's a fantastic heroine. Aral's interesting too... I somehow keep picturing a Sean Bean type. I'll post again when I finish Barrayar. ... by: Lois McMaster Bujold. It is comprised of two books, actually. The first is Shards of Honor and the second is Barrayar. So, does that make it books #4 and #5 on my fifty book challenge? :)
The Vorkosigan Saga was recommended to me by a friend as being fun sci-fi. These two books ... My favorite author is Lois McMaster Bujold.
After her, I find that I prefer (in no distinct order) James Alan Gardner, Dennis Danvers, and Robert J Sawyer.
All of the authors are simply great at characterization, tend to be good at humorous dialogue, and typically they avoid plot ... ... seeking acceptance (Harry Potter) or characters struggling with self-esteem issues. (Jennifer Roberson's Tiger or Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan).

Start with shards of honour and barrayar
For anyone who does't know shards of honor and barrayar are available as a single volume Cordelia's Honor. It also has a quite interesting afterword. ... and trying, and bogging down again. I've read Cetaganda since, and the first Cordelia, and am currently bogged down in Barrayar.
I don't know - the scene in The Warrior's Apprentice where Miles comes down off the green stuff and Mayhew discovers that "...he's like that _all_the_time_?" ... I love LMB. Shards of Honor and Barrayar are near the top of my all time favorites list.
Everyone here seems to be disappointed about the turn to fantasy... LMB wrote The Spirit Ring ages ago. That's an excellent fantasy. And I liked the Chalion series. It's not among my all time ... ... because that's when I first met her at Worldcon in Chicago. I was 17 and it was my first con. It was just before her book Barrayar came out, and on the penultimate day of the con, my friends and I spotted some flyers lying around in the dealers' room, saying modestly that LMB would be selling ... ... delectable Miles) but she also wrote about his mom, the even more delectable Cordelia Naismith, in Shards of Honor and Barrayar.
Here's a great (and painstaking) chronology of the hugely popular Vorkosigan series: http://www0.epinions.com/content_4838039684
Then there's Damia and ... ... isn't much help. ;)
lilithcat, another example might be the movie version of Titanic.
I've now finished Barrayar and am on to Cetaganda. I'd already read the books between those two. I should have trusted Cordelia to handle the disaster well. ... example, the Miles Vorkosigan series mentioned in the first post were actually published out of order, meaning that Barrayar (the "second" book in the series) was actually about the fifth or so written.
So a lot of people reading the series originally had the same problem!
... I haven't yet read of the assassination attempt which put him in the physical condition he's in. Now I'm halfway through Barrayar and dreading it.
Anybody else suffer like this? ;) ... today, and I came away with 11 (eleven!) Miles Vorkosigan or related books by Lois McMaster Bujold:

Another good and different space opera series is Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles series - Warrior's Apprentice, Barrayar, The Vor Game...
though I guess you'd have to be more explicit as to what your issue was with A Deepness in the Sky - it has been awhile since I read that. ... question. I must have had a stroke or something, didn't see it earlier.
The series begins with Shards of Honor, then Barrayar, but I think the later books, which introduce Miles Vorkorsigan, the son of the protagonists in the first two books, are really much more fun. The first Miles ...
