A novelization of the TV movie (or was it a mini-series?). Central character is an artist who cannot bring himself to fight, but becomes a newspaper artist reporting from the battlefields. Good device to put him in the middle of the action on several key battles. Other major characters play important roles at Gettysburg and Lincoln's assassination. Interesting examination of the moral dilemmas inherent in war, especially one of this kind, where people can be torn by conflicting loyalties, sympathies, and family ties. ( )
