I am reading His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. It was given to me and is not really my taste. It's like a Patrick O'Brian novel, but with dragons. The story is interesting, but the language is very stilted. I'm sticking with it for now.

btw, I just heard that Peter Jackson is doing a His Majesty's Dragon movie. Looking forward to that!

45. Throne of Jade (sister rec) The sequel to His Majesty's Dragon (see Message 85 above) and the second in the series, it was fairly entertaining, but I had hoped for better plotting. My sister thought these first 2 books were the best, so I will probably not continue on with the series. ...

Hi Cheli, I've heard lots of good things about His Majesty's Dragon and now I'm adding it to my TBR pile, along with The Chardonnay Charade. I'm really into mysteries lately, and this one sounds really good. I read The Lightning Thief earlier this year on my 11 year old grandson's ...

33. His Majesty's Dragon (TBR List) Highly entertaining book, first in a series, about dragons as part of the Napoleonic Wars. A fun and well-written mix of Patrick O'Brian (but much faster paced!) and dragons.

I've heard good things about Naomi Novik but have never read anything by her. I think I'll start with His Majesty's Dragon. THanks for the recommendation!

Book #62 His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. I loved it. Everything about it. A fine, fine, piece of writing. Must find the next in the series RIGHT NOW!

I finished Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon and rated it four stars. I finished Fifty Famous Stories Retold today, and started His Majesty's Dragon.

My favourite Neil Gaiman book is American Gods. I also really like the Temeraire series, it's a bit of a leap from Gaiman to be honest but has adventure and humour, and for me had the same kind of magic to it as Stardust as did Inkheart. I'd also second the Pratchett recommendation.

... I don't, I'll wait for one I do want to read. I would like to read this one, but I am a huge procrastinator, so, like with His Majesty's Dragon, I may read it a long time after you all. Hope you don't mind late chimer-inners. :)

I finished His Majesty's Dragon, lots of fun. Now I am reading Feet of Clay, by Terry Pratchett. Still plugging along in my non-fiction reading as well.

Ok, not really a discussion inducing post here - but I wanted to say that I really enjoyed Temeraire, more than I thought I would, and - like our Clam - I look forward to reading the next two in the future.

MrsLee, I didn't think Throne of Jade was as good as His Majesty's Dragon, but I still enjoyed it. I found Black Powder War excellent.

... I think. Tigana, American Gods, A Christmas Carol, Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark is Rising, Elantris and His Majesty's Dragon. I think we should keep this book a one thread discussion, as I've noticed that many people tend to skip the first threads and wait until we're ...

Arrrghhh! (not a pirate sound, a dismay sound) You people will turn me into a fantasy fiend yet. I am just now reading His Majesty's Dragon and loving it, so I will probably have to try this one too. To Ride Hell's Chasm sounds interesting to me, but I will be gone next week too. I'll find it ...

Am reading His Majesty's Dragon, good to hear your thoughts on the sequels Morphidae, because I am loving this book, but I do not like to be depressed, so maybe I'll skip them. I have too many other books that need to be read to be going out and buying sad/depressing books. Unless they are ...

Read The Jade Throne by Naomi Novik. Didn't like it as much as His Majesty's Dragon and found it a bit frustrating and depressing. So I read Brave New World and got REALLY depressed. So I watched a sappy Disney Movie - Ice Princess.

Even though I took two books with me on holidays His Majesty's Dragon and Birdsong, both of which I read and enjoyed tremendously, other books mysteriously seemed to find their way into my luggage! While visiting in Ottawa I found hardcover editions of The Bartimaeus Trilogy on sale ($6.00 ...

... Unwritten history: Life Amongst the Modocs, which turned out to be very good and very sad at the same time. Next up: His Majesty's Dragon

I finished His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik yesterday and just ADORED it. It's probably my favorite book so far this year. I'm about 50 pages into The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's alright. If it were less well written, I'd probably skip the rest from boredom.

... ago. So I started again at the beginning and have to say that I'm finding it easier this time. Unfortunately my copy of His Majesty's Dragon has finally turned up from Amazon so I'd better crack on with that as I'm already way to late for the discussion but I'm still feeling positive for DZ. ...

... have! My hubby ran out of reading material on our vacation, so made an emergency trip to Barnes and Noble. For me he bought His Majesty's Dragon and The Fifth Elephant. I wasn't going to read the Dragon one, but if I'm going to delve into other fantasy books, I'd rather do it with you all than ...

We found a used bookstore in Sebastopol, I browsed the fantasy section, of which there were many, looking for His Majesty's Dragon, but it wasn't there. I'm hesitant to dive into other fantasy for some reason. So I ended up in the mystery section, of which they had a lot of my favorite GA authors. ...

I gave up on my local library and bought His Majesty's Dragon yesterday. This is why I don't use the library, it takes forever for a book I want to come in, I then have to remember to return it, which I don't then have to pay the fine, and I don't have the fun of adding the book to my catalogue, ...

A reminder for those who use the 'Green Dragon' tag to add it to HMD. I also added 'GD Group Read' to both Elantris and Temeraire/His Majesties Dragon.

I finished In an Instant yesterday, and I am thoroughly enjoying His majesty's Dragon now. :o)

I vote for half His Majesty's Dragon (first or second half, doesn't matter to me) and half The Te of Piglet (maybe the middle half). Any other suggestions?

Or should we just have a single His Majesty's Dragon discussion thread? What do you think? It's not too long. (384 pages) Oh yeah, the vote for this book was overwhelming.

How long until the poles are closed? I already ordered His Majesty's Dragon since it looked to be the winner, and I'll likely read it either way. I actually got a Hardcover edition that has the first 3 books in the series in one, so hopefully it's worth the read.

... Okay, first I would head over to the fantasy section and snatch up a copy of Mistborn in hardcover. I'd also buy the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Then I'd buy another set of The Lord of the Rings. Right now I have 3 versions. Two 3-in-1 (one leatherbound and one paperback). I ...

I think I mentioned in the other thread, but my vote is for either His Majesty's Dragon or The Time Traveler's Wife. I'd read Contact if I could get a copy by the time the discussion starts, not too unlikely, but I don't think I'd like it very much since I'm not a fan of science fiction, so I ...

... a mile high... but if the auhor would please us with her participation in the discussion I would join in on His Majesty's Dragon.

It matters not to me. I've read TTW, but I'd be happy to reread it. His Majesty's Dragon sounds interesting too, and I'm always up for buying another book!

my voting would go in this order: 1. Temeraire/His Majesty's Dragon plus Naomi Novik is an LT Author, anyone fancy trying to get her in on the discussion if this book wins the vote? 2. The Time Traveler's Wife 2. Contact I haven't read any of them, but I'm interested in all ...

Be of good cheer, Kerian. His Majesty's Dragon was our second choice last time, I think. wasn't it? So, maybe we'll get to do the Niffenegger book next. :o) You should join anyway.

His Majesty's Dragon (aka Temeraire) by Naomi Novik Contact by Carl Sagan The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger I'm not voting yet, because I've already read two of them. (I don't mind rereading.)

... want to read it because they don't like the other books by him. I would love to read a book I don't know yet, therefore His Majesty's Dragon would be my favorite choice. I can also read Good Omens again for myself. Well, I will do that anyway. Like Busifer I've read it megamultiple times :-)

I've just read both His Majesty's Dragon and The Time Traveler's Wife, so I'd be happy to participate in a discussion of either. I had a look to see if I could get Children of Hurin sometime soon from a library around here, no luck, so I'll be out for that for sure.

#37, I just finished reading His Majesty's Dragon, it's got kind of slow pacing as this one is largely world-building and presenting the deepening relationship between the two main characters. But there is some plot. I did want to go out and buy the rest when I was done, but the book didn't ...

#36, I just discovered that His Majesty's Dragon is part of an ongoing Umptillionology or something. That also gives me pause about reading it. Can anyone here vouch for it as a stand alone? I'm really leery of multivolume extravaganzae..........

I have not participated in a group read yet, but I would be up for His Majesty's Dragon as well, it looks interesting. I will also wait for Children of Hurin in paperback.

I would be willing to do His Majesty's Dragon or Children of Hurin (though because it's unavailable in PB will reduce those willing a lot) I have a copy of Good Omen' sitting on my shelf near the top of my TBR so that one would definately get my vote.

... require a big commitment from me, and I can't between working full time and school part time. However, I am reading His Majesty's Dragon right now, and I LOVE it. Not in the same way I loved Elantris, but still a really good book. Equally, I've already read The Time Traveler's Wife ...

I'm in for Children of Hurin - (what is it with the touchstone for this?), or The Time Traveler's Wife or His Majesty's Dragon. I'm reading Children right now and listening to Dragon on my iPod. I really enjoyed our discussions about Elantris so it'll be great to do another book together.

... after a while, but the wounds are still fresh for me. :) OK, so that's a bit dramatic. But I might have a look at His Majesty's Dragon, though. Seems to me like our finalists thus far are (meaning books that more than one person seems to be interested in): Children of Hurin His M ...

... stuff, I should go finish Unfinished Tales. I'm putting a vote in for the Temeraire series... I already have a copy of His Majesty's Dragon sitting on top of my TBR pile.

I'm happy to group read Children of Hurin, though if something else comes up, then I'll be happy with that too (Temeraire is my choice to throw into the hat)... and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to sit on the fence ;-)

... my current situation is a bit unlikely. So if we do this soon, I probably won't be able to participate. I did just read Temeraire though, and I liked it a lot. I recommend that for all those who are wavering between whether or not to read it. =)

Tane in The Green Dragon : Books and Movies (Apr 29, 2007, 6:07pm)

Maybe Temeraire/His Majesty's Dragon could be the next group read? Just a thought...

I've finished Temeraire and liked it, if it seemed a bit without plot, but I've heard that it's a lot of set up for the next books in the trilogy, so I'm looking forward to reading those sometime in the near future. Currently I'm just starting The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, ...

I'd heard a while back the PJ had the rights to the Temeraire books (or so I believed), I think he'd be a very good choice, but then I think he'd be a very good choice to direct the phone book ;-)

#7 I heard that His Majesty's Dragon was like Jane Austen playing Dungeons & Dragons as Horatio Hornblower. I'm not sure I quite agree, but it sure made me pick it up! I really liked it. It's the first in the series, so a lot of it is set-up, but it's good set-up focused on presenting the ...

... could Heath Ledger be Satan? ... Then again, who could be Satan? I'll have to think on this. I really have to read His Majesty's Dragon. Generally I'm not a huge fan of movies made from books, because they turn out differently than how I'd expect and they tend to ruin my own ...

Brandon, If I were voting (and I won't be) and I voted for His Majesty's Dragon, I might figure that I should vote for someone else for the Campbell Award. So maybe you should campaign for HMD to win. :-) Good luck to both of you.

... easy to read, and trying to convince the publishing idiots they are idiots. That seems pretty award worthy to me. Temeraire is military naval fantasy with dragons as ships/planes I think, with what someone was saying on an oz list the other day. A hornblower sort of riff or something?

Has anyone mentioned that Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon is on the Hugo ballot in the best novel category, and that she and Brandon Sanderson are both up for the John W. Campbell award? Congratulations to both! Anyone spot any other LT authors?

In the hope of bringing some life to this group: Well, I've already posted about Temeraire by Naomi Novik a couple of other places on LT, but I'm going to talk about the book here, too, because I believe it's a winner both as a book to read and as an investment. The UK true first/first of ...

Clamairy, I've read His Majesty's Dragon and enjoyed it very much. I borrowed it from the library, so it's not listed in my library here.

Yup. We make a lot of chit chat here. :o) Has anyone read Naomi Novik's books? I bought His Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade and Black Powder War for my daughter recently, and she hasn't read them yet. I'm curious to know if they are any good.
