2822 The Ferocious Engine of Democracy: A History of the American Presidency Volume Two Theodore Roosevelt through George Bush, by Michael P. Riccards (read 15 Jan 1996) This book I thought worth reading because it is full of judgments on events and men. I found I agreed with the author a lot. He has good things to say about Jimmy Carter's administration, and his comments on Reagan are incisive and so true. The rantings of the Republican right these days--to whom Reagan is a demi-god--completely ignore that the national debt jumped from $908 billion in 1980 to 2.68 trillion in 1989. The debt accumulated was greater than the total from 1789 to 1980! It has been good to read this book, even though it is so general that I feel no need to list as "to be read by me" any of the numerous books listed in the 30 pages of footnotes. ( )
