This is a reprint of Toynbee's 1880-1881 Lectures originaly printed in 1884. The Beacon Press edition contains a brief praface by his nephew, Arnold J. Toynbee.
The 1898 edtion also contains a memoir of Toynbee by Benjamin Jowet and five additional related addresses of Toynbee.
The subject of these lectures is the Industrial and Agrarian Revolution at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries. Including chapters on England in 1760, the mercantile system and Adam Smith, the growth of pauperism and the future of the working classes.
