`Now that we have the copyright, and have some scripts written, and got a good-looking actor to play him, let's make some TV movies about Horatio Hornblower!.``
"Okay, where are we going to shoot these episodes?"
"I don't know, let's look at places with good tax write-offs, where we might be able to still find sailing ships."
"Somewhere with good climate, I don't want to work outside in the rain again. Ever."
So they shot the outdoor stuff on the north coast of Turkey, where you can still rent some windwagons. And, they discovered that they needed partial ship sections for scenes and that some differing size models would be necessary so they brought in Martin Saville as chief model maker, and he found some good wood workers nearby in Ukraine, and they got to work.
And some things went wrong, and they fixed them, and some other things went wrong and they devised work-arounds, and some things went wrong, and they coped. They made their films, and very entertaining they are, and you can find them. And Martin Saville has made his book out of his experiences. It is a good book to read if you are interested in making movies, building models, and making them seem real, and about the whole process of making movies. Or if you like pictures of sailing ships, some of them exceedingly intimate. ( )
