#65 Strong Poison

I would echo Storeetller. Strong Poison is one of my favorites, but you want to get know Wimsey before that point. Also, I think it is not much of spoiler to add that the book in no way ends like a happily-ever-after romance.

#153 Oh, my, CD1am, your very low opinion of Lord Peter in Strong Poison struck me, and I feel I simply must respond to defend him and the series (and the author). Lord Peter's actions vis-a-vis Harriett Vane didn't affect me the same way they did you, perhaps because I'd read the series from ...

I'm in Britain in my first Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers. So far, I'm not impressed with the character.

Just started my first Dorothy Sayers' mystery, Strong Poison. Lord Peter Wimsey is one of the most ridiculous characters I've come across. He falls in love after seeing a woman, from a distance, one day in court?!?! And proposes to her after seeing her three days in court without nary a ...

... I'd like to read. A word about the Dorothy Sayers--Have His Carcase: You probably know this, but you should read Strong Poison before reading Carcase because these are the first 2 of the 4 novels that feature Harriet Vane and should be read in order to follow the developing ...

#72 krazy4katz In order to get the most out of # 10 Gaudy Night you should read #5 Strong Poison and #7 Have His Carcase because these are the ones that deal with the relationship between Lord Peter and Harriet Vane and you won't enjoy Gaudy Night as much without knowing what went before. ...

74. Audio book - Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers. Very fun to listen to - Sayers was so clever! Her characters are a hoot. This was the book that introduced Harriet Vane, who I believe appears in some of the later books. The actor who played Peter Wimsey in the TV series read the book, ...

... of The Artist, but when I'm not reading Joyce, I'm reading old crime fiction. Not Sayers' best but diverting and fun. Strong Poison and Gaudy Night are the best though.

33. Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers Harriet Vane shows up in Lord Peter's life. Vane is based on Sayers herself, and although only introduced and not really developed as a character, this sets the stage for their future partnership. Witty, literate, and lively writing. Easy and fun ...

... any more of his books, though - think I'll just read them. His voice didn't match my image of him. Anyway, I've started Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers read by Ian Carmichael. I didn't like him too much as reader of The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club but I've listened to several ...

DING DING DING! It is Strong Poison. Your turn, Jolene.

... to chronological order, at least in my opinion, although Clouds of Witness gives background for some of the action in Strong Poison. I know some people think the first book is weaker, but I admit a great fondness for Whose Body?. You can find it online at karenmarie in 75 Books Challenge for 2008 : Zelda's list for 2008 (Apr 1, 2008, 5:41am)

mrsradcliffe, along with karenmarie and LydiaHD, I strongly suggest that you start with an earlier Sayers book. Either Strong Poison or one of the Wimsey books before Harriet comes on the scene. Lucky you. To discover Wimsey for the first time. Edited b/c i cant tipe.

... books with Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane and you might want to consider reading the first meeting of the two first: Strong Poison. I forget the order after that, but there are several with both of them together and at least one with just Peter Wimsey with references to Harriet Vane. ...

37. Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers. I really enjoyed this--a light but well-written book. I'm looking forward to reading the other Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries now.

... of what happened at El Mozote in 1981 and how the event was deliberately suppressed for the sake of the Cold War. 79. Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers Instead of the murder, the trial, or the mystery's solution, the high points of the novel are a pair of sequences -- a lock-picking ...

... Sayers as well. Out-of-wedlock sex figures prominently in Clouds of Witness, Murder Must Advertise, not to mention Strong Poison. Heck, if Harriet hadn't had an illicit relationship with Philip Boyes, she'd never have met Peter! There's bigamy in The Nine Tailors, a suggestion of ...

No fantasy at the moment only golden age detectives... Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers Strong poison idem Whose body? Problem is I have to much time to read at work, so I run out of books too fast...

I'm rereading all my Dorothy L. Sayers books, will be finished Whose Body today and then on to Strong Poison. Lord Peter is such a delight. I'm looking forward to getting my Early Reviewers book too, seems to be taking a long time to come. I get so impatient when waiting for books in ...

... Sayers has an older woman who helps her detective, Lord Peter Wimsey, Miss Climpson. She appears in Unnatural Death and Strong Poison, I'm not sure about any others. Laurie King also has some strong older women in some of her mysteries which are not series, Folly and A Darker Place ...

... programs you may have missed through the week. Most recently I've listened to a dramatization of Dorothy L. Sayers Strong Poison, and The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club; and a dramatization of the Trojan War "Troy."

I've been listening to Strong Poison on BBC 7 and I was very amused by Miss Climpson - she is probably my favourite character.

... Lord Peter meets Harriet when she's on trial for the murder of her lover (with whom she lived out of wedlock). It's called Strong Poison. He felt and instant attraction to her and decided she was the woman for him. In the meantime he solves the murder, but she declines his offer of marriage ...

Not recent books, but, my goodness, Dorothy L. Sayers' Wimsey/Vane books, Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon (yes, reader, she married him), are full of "commitment phobia"! Getting Harriet to say "yes" took an amount of time and effort on Lord Pe ...

... would love to be a part of it. The Nine Tailors is high on my list of non-Harriet books, but I must stick with the first, Strong Poison for my Harriet books. Sets the stage, so to speak. LibraryThing is going to make me more purposeful in my book purchasing. One can only find so much at ...

in my opinion Poison by Chris Wooding or Never the Bride by Paul Magrs.

Sayers is going to be tough find consensus. Myself I would say Strong Poison and Murder Must Advertise. For Christie, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Murder at the Vicarage and possibly Murder on the Orient Express, as well as And Then there were None
