This is an excelent book of the American Indian west of the Mississippi. The author describes the culture of each tribe and its clothing, , its villages, leaterh preperation, tools, meaning of featheres and scalps, and many other objects and values. The book includes illustrations in various degrees of detail of severa classes of subjects; the people, from chiefs, warriors, squaws, young people, and infants; landscapes, ceremonies, and the interior of both teepees and huts.

In Volme 1, he focuses on the various Plains Indians tribes, far fromEuroean settlers influence. Catlin spent many years with these Indians. ( )
