L'action se situe en Alsace, avant 1900, pendant l'occupation allemande, dans un contexte de résistance de toute la population à l'occupant : refus de parler l'allemand, de l'administration allemande, de la culture allemande, etc. Joseph Oberlé, riche industriel, collabore avec les occupants, envoie son fils faire ses études de droit en Allemagne, et souhaite que sa fille Lucienne Oberlé devienne l'épouse d'un Allemand. Son épouse Monique et son fils Jean, animés d'un esprit de résistance conforme au sentiment majoritaire de la population, sont opposés à ses projets. Tous les éléments du drame sont donc en place, et Jean en sera la figure centrale.
