Chekhov is now my favorite Russian author. This book of 30 short stories cut slices of Russia and laid them bare. Though some may see them as vignettes of hopelessness I thought that most characters displayed at least a glimmer of, if not ... Nice idea! I scrolled through nearly 300 entries to get to (unbelievably) Stories by Anton Chekhov (not the touchstoned work). It's on my list in the 888 Challenge this year, so it won't be a problem to read and review.
Yet ... LTers have catalogued so many books of Chekhov stories, and ... "888 Challenge: Read 8 books in each of 8 categories during 2008." It feels big -- 64 books! -- since I’ve read only ~45 books per year in each of the last 5 years.
But this year's choices are well-screened: every book designated by "#" comes from my to-be-read shelves -- books I already own ... ... each in 8 different categories in 2008"), and included a category of short stories:
