This is not generally what I default to, but my mom reads a lot of Anita Shreve and I was curious and this one caught my attention. ( )Eden Close is told from the point of view of Andrew, a New York City executive who returns to his hometown when his mother dies. Andrew remembers his next door neighbor and childhood friend, Eden Close, who was raped in a home invasion; her father was shot to death, and the blast made her blind. Eden's mother, Edith, is overprotective of Eden and shuts her off from the outside world, and their relationship is further strained when Andrew tries to once again become part of Eden's life. The book is as much about the changes that occur as we grow up as it is about uncovering what really happened the night Eden was raped and blinded and the role Andrew's family played in the incident. Andrew coaxes Eden out of her shell and tries to free her from the weight of her overbearing mother, resulting in a dramatic ending. This isn't Shreve's best book, in my opinion, but the characters and plot are interesting enough to make it a good read. A little disturbing how things turn out during the entire story. It IS interesting, and you get caught up to try to find out what really happened to Eden Close to cause her to be in the circumstances she is in. My friend recommended the book...you sort of get caught up in it and need to finish it...not that it is bad and you wouldn't want to finish it, it is just a little sad. Painful book to read, and not a good one for me to read when my own mother is ill. I have to say I', liking Anita Shreve less and less with each more recent book. yet I keep reading her. This one held no plot surprises and the writing was not up to what I expect of her. Oh well... very disappointed for a southern gothic. no reviews | add a review
