... read to me in 4th grade; then in 5th grade it was A Wizard of Earthsea; then in junior high/middle school, we read Flowers for Algernon, Planet of the Apes, and Animal Farm. Our drama class read aloud, then enacted, several Star Trek scripts. That was cool. (I got to be Chek ... ... "Rain, Rain, Go Away" by Isaac Asimov and an excerpt from Jurassic Park. In some other class (6th grade? 8th?) we read Flowers for Algernon. I don't recall any other sci-fi. We were given Flowers for Algernon in english class. It was the novella version, and we'd have been in grade 8 or 9, I'm guessing. ... I get to see how the movie compares.

Crime & Detectiv ... ... here, but I imagine that most non-librarian users really won't care at all about ISBNs or editions. One has simply read Flowers for Algernon or not read it. The more popular a book is, the more likely this is to be true.

I've enjoyed all of these books and will read ... In this case (and Blood Music and Flowers For Algernon which are other instances of the same issue) they will stay uncombined barring any idiots. The shorter work is clearly marked with [short story] suffixing the title and is separate at the moment.

I've really loved reading this month and its been hard to narrow it down to three but I think my favourites were
1. Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes - a thought-provoking idea for a story and a very moving ending.
2. If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things - Jon McGregor - ... ... Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett - spotted it in the supermarket and thought it sounded funny. Was a nice, light read.

I have been wanting this book for ages but felt put off by knowing that the story would be a sad one (it was the mouse I worried about more than the man.) I'm glad that I read it now, the story was sad but thoughtful ... ... was a more honest account. I also didn't really believe that the narrator was a 5 year child for the whole book.

I read Flowers for Algernon instead. One of those I should have gotten around to sooner. Quite good. To introduce myself, my name is Karen, I work in the medical field, I have 2 teens, a dog, two cats, and I have always had a passion for reading (also like travel, photography, ... ... I actually had a lot of trouble getting into this book. I read the short story in 8th grade and from what I remember, really enjoyed it. It seemed to drag throughout the middle, but the ending picked up and redeemed the story overall. > heatherlynn85
I just finished Flowers for Algernon last month and I adored it! It's one of my best reads of 2008. But then again, I went into the story completely blank. Maybe it's better to read when you don't know the story? I'm making my way through Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes which is taking me longer than I expected. I'm finding it very hard to get into. I read the short story back in 8th grade and I think I enjoyed that much better. It's a great shame indeed to ban any book. Great or small. For instance, this last one I just finished;

Her only complaint with Pride and Prejudice has been that it is a much slower read than Flowers for Algernon which she was able to read in one day last week (again staying up until 11 pm, hiding in the bathroom because her bedroom light was supposed to be out). ... Flowers For Algernon - Daniel Keyes (read 1970) I don't remember any science fiction in school from sixth grade, but Fahrenheit 451 and Flowers for Algernon were two that we read at the beginning of seventh grade. That shouldn't be too far off from the end of sixth, right? Fahrenheit 451 definitely has real world application, though if you' ... ... like The Rocking Horse Winner. I actually remember the Jr high list better : The Red Badge of Courage, The Red pony, Flowers for Algernon, Twelve Angry men,and A Raisin in the Sun. ... it that is forever burned into your brain? So every time you see a certain thing or hear a certain thing you think of it.
Flowers for Algernon is that book for me. Everytime I see a mouse in a maze on TV or whatever I always think 'Oh poor Algernon' and get kinda depressed. The thing is, I ... ... am! I, too, am one who has been moved to massive tears by several books, especially Marley and Me, The Notebook, and Flowers for Algernon.
But let me say, for all those putting off reading Marley and Me because of the fear of crying...DON'T!!! Yes, it makes you cry, and yes, it has ... Algernon is one of the few books on our shelves that has never been opened... I remember reading it in Jr High (?) but now it will go to the top of the "Next" stack...
Read Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane last night, and I can see how it could produce tears (in someone else, my cheeks ... ... the kite runner, harry potter and the half blood prince, tuesday with morrie etc etc.
but none made me cried as hard as flowers for algernon, i was practically weeping towards the end of the book.
in fact, just thinking about the book alone makes me tearful. :'( ... like I did with the Hugo, from the bottom up.

If you haven't read 2001 I'd recommend it (or just about anything else by Arthur C. Clarke - read it, then double check the first published ... I Googled - Flowers for Algernon first appeared as a short story in a Sci Fi magazine in 1958 - Keyes got a SciFi award for it and he expanded it into a book in the 1960's.
