BOOK 118 World Without End by Ken Follett
This is the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth which I read earlier this year. I really liked it dispite the fact that it is basically ... ... readers, you are the the ones responsible for making this group read special, I just set it up!
FYI- Our group read for World Without End is slated for Jan 15th. Actually that's gives plenty of time if you haven't yet read Pillars of the Earth.
I'm considering doing a G.R. of Midnight's C ... ... This is a wonderful group and I hope when this read is done, we can gather again in mid January for Ken Follett's World Without End.

This mammoth of a book is like the TV show "Days of Our Lives" set in the middle ages. That may sound like a recipe for a catastrophe, but it actually is a winning compination. At least for me; I loved it! :) Karen- I'm glad you enjoyed World Without End. It seemed to have got mixed reviews. You'll have to stop by the group read of it in January and see what people are saying! World Without End wasn't as good as Pillars of the Earth IMO, but was still a good read. I finished World Without End Ken Follett last night. I thought it was excellent. The special part is that I've been discussing it with my daughter and she has such interesting thoughts and insights.
Carrying on the plague theme, I picked up a non-fiction book for my 999 Challenge Epidemiolog ... I just finished World Without End by Ken Follett, the sequel (although it takes place 200 years after the first book) to Pillars of the Earth.
It was a very satisfying read although there was less about actual building than the first book. But the characters were well drawn, the story ... ... I'll be interested in hearing how your group liked/disliked it.
I'm about 60 pages away from finishing the marathon read World Without End by Ken Follett. I was going to read at lunch today, but some friends invited me out instead.... a combination of Hooray! lunch with friends and Drat! ... I'm about halfway through World Without End by Ken Follett and enjoying it immensely. It's interesting, detailed, thought-provoking, and best of all, I can discuss it with my daughter who finished it two weeks ago and pushed me into reading it sooner than I wanted to. She was right to do so. ... ... of God but it sits patiently on my shelves waiting for me to be in the right mood to read it.
I'm currently reading World Without End by Ken Follett so I can discuss it with my daughter. She just finished it last week. I'm only on page 93, so haven't gotten far. It has 1014 pages. ... #125 Time-wise, Booksloth, I'm right there with you - 1347 in England in World Without End by Ken Follett. The book spans the time period 1327 to 1361. Haven't quite gotten to the black death yet.

I read 500 of the 1000 pages of World Without End, but I just don't have time to continue with it. I really can't identify with any of the characters and I can't read it fast enough to get through the bad ... ... almost two years and reread it after part 2.
I very rarely give up on books, but after reading 500 of the 1000 pages of World Without End I have returned it to the library. I just don't have the time to really get into it. I liked the prequel Pillars of the Earth, but I read a lot of that ... I've gotten through 500 of the 1000 pages of World Without End and I just don't want to pick it up anymore. I liked the prequel Pillars of the Earth, but I just can't seem to get into this one. A contributing factor is that I am very busy at school helping get the new computers ready for the ... Another example I can think of is World Without End by Ken Follett. I heard some bad reviews for it, but good reviews for Pillars of the Earth but I enjoyed both quite a bit. I've finished Ken Follett's World Without End, and will start Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror when I get home tonight, thus bringing the TBR pile down to 69. "A Distant Mirror" is a history of the 14th century and covers much the same period as World Without End. I read it about 25 ... ... and 3 (as we had read the library copies), the other 4 Ripley stories by Highsmith, The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen, World Without End, the critiqued version of The Great Gatsby, Talk of Angels, courtesy of Barbara, (many thanks my dear), Beyond These Walls, Gone to Earth, Harriet ... ... to start rereading A Walk in the Woods which is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I am also going to tackle World Without End. It is just so huge, but I will never be able to do it once school starts. Luckily school doesn't start here for another five weeks. I hope it doesn't ... ... paperback at a thrift store somewhere. Meanwhile, the gorgeous oversize trade paperback sits proudly on my shelves.
And World without End? Beautiful hardcover, just waiting to be read. Makes my wrists hurt to think about it.

Pillars of the Earth was better in my opinion but they were both very very good. Don't expect the way the people behave to be historically accurate (although the building process was) but I found it so enjoyable.

40. World Without End - Ken Follett : My reading had been in sort of a lull for about a month, then I picked up this book little more than a week ago, and have since been reading again during every spare minute. This is by far the longest novel I've ever read, more than 1,000 pages. It was ... ... and perhaps I'm just a tad disappointed. I would not discourage anybody from reading it, though. And I plan to read World Without End the sequel. ... I downloaded the sample a few weeks ago and will get to it if I can ever find my way out of midieval English cathedrals! World Without End...1026 pages but worth it. ... I've reviewed some other novels mentioned in this thread also: Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, Geraldine Brooks' People of the Book and Donna Cross's Pope Joan - all excellent books, but As Meat Loves Salt just had that something extra for me. ... ... hoped the book would improve through the dragging parts, but after finishing it disappointed, no way was I going to tackle World Without End.
This week, I abandoned Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I did not even make it to the 50 page limit. I ended up skimming a lot of Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. These novels did not live up to the hype, although I have definitely read worse! It was pretty cool that in both novels the women ruled.... how could we have left the middle-ages without females??? I've a brand new copy of World Without End staring me in the face. I haven't read good reviews on it--Pillars of the Earth was really a good read, but I think I'd better give up on my plans for World Without End. Thanks for making up my mind! Over the weekend I threw down my headphones in disgust and stopped listening to World Without End by Ken Follett. Even though I was on part 5 and had devoted 40 hours of listening, it was too much to continue with the grinding hardship and wanton cruelty visited upon just about every character ... ...

I'm listening to World without End by Ken Follett. ... to Pillars of the Earth over my Christmas driving back and forth to family and loved it! I just started the sequel, World without End, and so far, so good.
Just a comment on abridgements. Normally I won't listen to them because they just leave out too much, but I do have one I really ... Pillars of the Earth and World Without End both by Ken Follet should fit the bill. Both center around life in Kingsbridge, England. The first is set in the 12th century, the second in the 14th. Soap opera-ish, but emotional and engaging.
Oh and while each individual installment isn't over 1 ... ... an audiobook while doing needlework - I'm going to have to try it out one day. And it's interesting to hear that you liked World Without End so much better presumably because you listened to it rather than read it. I'll definitely have to start downloading some stuff to my iPod and give it a ... ... leave her out? What happened to her?
Someone with the book please help me sleep at night!
ETA: I haven't read/heard World Without End yet, so just let me know if Follett left me hanging for a reason.... ... comments on Pillars of the Earth. I felt the book was about 400 pages too long. One of my co-workers was raving about World Without End on audio so I thought I would give it a try and what a difference. The reader has such a beautiful voice and the 43 hours just flew by. I enjoyed World ... I've been keeping track of my books read in 2008 on my profile, and this looked like a fun way to do it too. I got off to a slow start, but am taking a month-long vacation in August/September and hope to make up some ground then. So far:

2. World With ... Ken Follett wrote Pillars of the Earth and World Without End about life in Medieval England. I found them fairly authentic but a bit clean in his description of living conditions. The strength of the women in the book endeared me to the stories! I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth and World Without End (sequel to the first), although I do not think of them as "great" works. The strength of the women in the books really excited me. At first I thought this was literary license, but after doing research on the era's in which the stories took ... I will definitely read World Without End, but I had to take a break!

Forever a Novel, by Pete Hamill (One of my favorite novels of recent years--highly recommended) ... thing. In my opinion, though, this wasn't a solid read. The best thing I got out of it is that I have zero desire to read World Without End, which is good because my TBR is too long as is.

I liked the way he dealt with the Black Death in the book; rather than speculating on causes and disease identification, he just described the symptoms and spread much as the fourteenth century ... ... Duma Key by Stephen King. I'm about halfway through and it is an excellent book. One of his best!
Also reading World Without End by Ken Follett. I loved Pillars of the Earth and this one is shaping up to be just as good.

Unabridged audiobook which was 44 hours and 55 minutes long read by John Lee. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction. John Lee is by far the best narrator I have ever listened to on audiobooks. I never tired of the story, ... ... been pretty diverse but seldom as long as this book...if memory serves, it was over 900 pages.
I can't wait to get to World Without End! I first noticed Pillars of Earth when the sequal was published World Without End. I read so many great reviews of Pillars and had been doing a lot of reading in that time-period in English history. Also, it was a unique book for an author like Ken Follett.
It kept my attention throughout...I ... ... finished Duchess A Novel of Sarah Churchill and started Rebecca. I am still reading Middlemarch and listening to World Without End. I haven't read a book that has really drawn me in this year. However, the one that came closest is World Without End by Ken Follett, the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth. The sheer dramaticism kept me pushing to the next scene, in that quintessential good book quality that makes you keep ... ... one of my favorite books for almost 20 years. It was with some apprehension that I decided to re-read it before beginning World Without End, afraid that it wouldn't live up to my memory. It did, however. And in some ways I think I enjoyed it even more this time, since I wasn't in any hurry ... I finished World Without End, and plan to post a review of it before the end of the weekend. I'm not sure what to start next. I also plan to go to the library tomorrow to get a book-on-CD. I'm just going to pick from what they have there. ... exceed the 50.

Currently reading Middlemarch and listening to World Without End. Up next, Rebecca. I am reading Middlemarch for the Group Read thread. Listening to World Without End because I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth and reading Dutchess, A Novel of Sarah Churchill because it sounded interesting and it was a bargain book.
By the way #1, it's nice to see you read a family ... ... Four I listed on BookMooch and they were gone immediately. The others which included Unbowed by Wangari Maathai, World Without End by Ken Follett and A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah were for me. Unfortunately, my dogearing, spine binding husband is interested in reading a ... Wow, this really is working out to double the messages. I'm started World Without End today. I will hopefully finish Florence: the Golden Age 1138-1737 this weekend. I've had many patrons come in asking where the "bibliography" section is.
Also, when World Without End first came out, I fielded requests for "The Ends of the Earth," and other variations. My swap buddy bought World without End and is going to loan it to me while she is listening to my Pillars of the Earth (I listened to Pillars over the Christmas drives back and forth to relatives).

Edited to add that it's acyually over thirty years... I hadn't quite finished when I posted! ... fantastic! There were about 300 pages where I wanted to abandon the book and am so glad I did not. I can't wait to read World Without End next. ... than $10 including postage. Apparently most of her books are out of print. Seems strange....

I'm not the biggest fan of his writing style, but this one and Pillars of the Earth definitely hooked me. I really liked it. There's also a sequel (loosely interpreted) to the Pillars of Earth, if you're interested: World Without End.
It takes place a few generations later in the same village. Not as good, but still worth a read if you liked the first one. ... two more in fiction by Ann Benson: The Physician's Tale and Thief of Souls.
Additionally, Ken Follett's World Without End--the second in his series of novels about a cathedral town in England treats the first coming of the plague to Europe.
And back to nonfiction: I meant ... ... the rest of the Nightrunner and Bartimeus trilogies, and a book or two by Kazuo Ishiguro. Also, I'd probably like World Without End, but I'm a little worried about its negative reviews. ... I think Santa (aka me!) will be picking up a book or two this weekend, regardless...I don't think I can wait any longer for World Without End! ... of the Earth. It's a thousand pages, shhhh. Trying to get through it. So that I can get to the thousand page sequel,World Without End.

It's been 18 years between Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. yup I'm crushed... I just got Ken Follett's World Without End. Have any of you read it? ... though, so I don't begrudge the time I'm spending on it. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and purchase the "sequel" World Without End when it comes out on 10/6.
I received The Little Prince from a friend, and I plan to read that next week.
