3766. Patton A Genius for War, by Carlo D'Este (read 6 July 2003) This superb biography, published in 1995, is stunningly well-written and tells very well the fantastic life of an amazing though deeply-flawed man, avid to be in war with exploits as a general astounding to read about. D'Este paints Patton's positions as mostly right in regard to the war in France, leaving Bradley and Eisenhower diminished--certainly not the impression I had after reading Clay Blair's "autobiography" of Bradley on 26 Feb 1994. This bio was everything one could hope it could be and I found its reading thoroughly enjoyable and well-done--without flaw, though its subject certainly was not. ( )

One of the best military biographies I have ever read. D'Este seeks out documents and tells his story, dammit, and draws a portrait of perhaps one of the best generals since Stonewall. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0060927623, Paperback)

Patton: A Genius for War is a full-fledged portrait of an extraordinary American that reveals the complex and contradictory personality that lay behind the swashbuckling and brash facade. According to Publishers Weekly, the result is "a major biography of a major American military figure."

"This massive work is biography at its very best. Literate and meaty, incisive and balanced, detailed without being pedantic. Mr. D'Este's Patton takes its rightful place as the definitive biography of this American warrior." --Calvin L. Christman, Dallas Morning News

"D'Este tells this story well, and gives us a new understanding of this great and troubled man."-The Wall Street Journal

"An instant classic." --Douglas Brinkley, director, Eisenhower Center
