This college composition textbook by Bain asserts that, although experience cannot be taught, English teachers do have the ability to condense the good and bad of composition into principles that can be taught with practice. This textbook is divided into two parts: part one details the figures of speech and their principles; part two details the kinds of composition and their principles. The 1887 edition represents an extension of the 1884 edition. The Schultz Archive includes the complete text of the 1884 edition (pages 82-83 repeat), and the text is good quality. The Archive includes the complete text of the 1887 edition also, but it is missing several pages, and many of the scans are bad quality (either part of the page is cut off or scans are blurry).
