Se trata de reflejar el ambiente de las clases medias y obreras (nunca marginales) del Madrid de la Dictadura de Primo de Rivera. Aub lo hace a través de un reparto coral, centrado en los vecinos de la calle que da título al libro. Aparecen desde la portera al mismísimo Ortega y Gasset, pasando por un tipógrafo socialista (muy honrado, estereotípico), un periodista caradura, un arribista de provincias, etc. De fondo, mucho sexo, básicamente adulterino, y largas y en gran medida aburridas discusiones sobre política y literatura. Esto último, que probablemente tenía sentido al escribirla (se publicó en 1968) es lo que estropea la obra hoy. Sin embargo, la prosa de Aub, cortante, saltona, pegada a la realidad del cómo se habla en la calle, permite que lleguemos al final sin cansarnos demasiado. ( )
