3055 Mark of the Beast: Death and Degradation in the Literature of the Great War, by Alfredo Bonadeo (read 23 Feb 1998) When I saw this book on a library shelf I could not resist reading it. But I did not find it enthralling. Since the author is Italian, he talks much about the horror of the fighting on the Italian front. The Italian commander (Luigi Cadorna) makes Haig appear almost human! There were 12 battles, 11 being attacks by Italy all of which were unsuccessful, and the 12th battle was Caporetta. This book is so hard on the war it is depressing. I prefer to feel the war had some purpose, and some who died therein did not die in vain. ( )
