Ian Scot-Kilvert was well chosen for this selection from Plutarch's lives. It is a good entrance to the Hellenistic World. I repeat that this Penguin series misses a good deal of material and if you are looking for other stuff than this set of nine, a complete translation is available in the Great Books of the western world series. Good Penguinization of the Hellenistic lives. Note the LC cataloger's editorial addition "[Translated from the Latin]." Dufus. ( )

Perhaps Plutarch's best known work from his long series. I can forgive his story-telling flourishes since the stories themselves are so enthralling. A good place to start for people interested in the ancient world. ( )
