This book is from the journaling of a father, David Bagby, and how him and his wife survived the loss (murder) of their son and the following days of waiting to see justice brought to his murderer. That justice never comes. The ex-girlfriend that is the murderer is pregnant with David's grandson, so instead of staying away from her, they are more engaged than ever in an attempt to see their grandson.
