2015 James K. Polk: Jacksonian 1795-1843, by Charles Sellers (read 13 Jul 1986) Polk was born in North Carolina in 1795. He went to Tennessee in his youth, but attended the University of North Carolina. This book is very thorough--in fact some of the meticulous recounting of political maneuvering and issues gets tiresome. But in general it is a good book. It ends in 1843, with Polk having just lost the governorship for the second straight time. The book shows the Whigs (modeled after the Whigs who resisted James II ad brought about the Revolution of 1688) coming into existence. ( )
