Dead Man's Hand was even more well-edited than Ace in the Hole, the previous entry in the series, probably because there were only two authors, and both of them good ones. Thing is, even if Martin got the style down for his cynical PI, these guys still don't know how to write a good mystery. I think I figured it out around the first appearance of the murderer in the book, probably about 50 pages in or so. Ah well; stylistically, the book is good, and it's in some ways a better take on the mysteries-with-superhuman-suspects than Powers of Detection, a sci-fi/mystery anthology, was. I enjoyed this slightly less than Ace in the Hole, but it was still good. ( )Dead Man's Hand is set at the same time as the events of Ace In the Hole, during the 1988 Democratic National Convetion. Chrysalis, a club owner and information broker, has been murdered. She also happened to be a joker with invisible skin. One time lover Yeoman sets out to find the killer, and so does Jay 'Popinjay' Ackroyd, a classic rumpled private investigator, who also happens to be an ace with teleportation powers. It is a twisting, turning ride to finally get to the murderer. http://superprose.blogspot.com/2006/1... no reviews | add a review
