3342. Kaiser Wilhelm II: Germany's Last Emperor, by John Van der Kiste (read Sept 2, 2000). Since I had read a bio of the last Kaiser less than 11 years ago I am not sure why I read this new bio of him, but it was fun to read, tho it is not well footnoted, and its bibliography is not first rate. I like royal biography, tho this book trod awfully familiar ground. ( )

Drawing on a wide range of contemporary sources, this biography examines the complex personality of Germany's last emperor. Born in 1859, the eldest grandchild of Queen Victoria, Prince Wilhelm was torn between two cultures - that of the Prussian Junker and that of the English liberal gentleman.

Filled with anecdotes and fun to read, this book argues that Wilhelm was no villain but at worst, he was a man out of his depth as leader of Europe's leading military power.
