Written in a matter-of-fact poetic style, this book is about a journey into a Mexico that is a scary frontier for a young lady bent on tracing her roots. A remorselessly realistic road trip into identity, her journey also forces her [Mexican] mother to look underneath the carpet where she's shoved her own past. Martin's is an authentic voice rich in detail and which succeeds in showing us a starkly real world. ( )
