But perhaps I'm biased, because I often agree with her. She's the only critic who shares my feelings about Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, for example (here, see especially paragraph 4). 19. On Chesil Beach - Ian McEwan ... this was the first McEwan novel I ever read, and he is now one of my favorite writers. I highly recommend Amsterdam, On Chesil Beach, and Saturday, if you haven't read them. Atonement got more praise, but I wasn't as thrilled with it.

*If this is true, it says something interesting about the almost universal and unequivocal praise for On Chesil Beach...hmm... There is a lot to like about Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, but not a lot to love. One has to enjoy the quiet competence with which McEwan has put the novel together, the way his prose ticks along, and the scenes in which McEwan shows us what it was like to come of age before "sex began ... ... oks/08-books-read/">here.

It was only the second book by Ian McEwan that I had ever read, the first being On Chesil Beach. ... I'm going to give the latter another try, since I just don't think I was in the mood for it when I read it. Have you read On Chesil Beach yet? It's quite a change from Saturday, but--unexpectedly--it haunted me for weeks after I finished it. ... of the books I've read so far this year. I've read a bit of an McEwan, but not Atonement. I thought in his most recent one, On Chesil Beach the author was really coasting on recent successes. It was finely and beautifully observed, but felt incomplete to me.

On Chesil Beach is one of my top 5 for this quarter. Mister Pip is on my wishlist, and I had a Rachel Seiffert book in my hand 2 days ago. I also read Distant Shores and On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah over the last couple of weeks. I tried On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, but like A Thousand Splendid Suns was not quite in the right mood to read it just yet. I can usually go back to those kinds of books ... ... a full-length one. Having said which (and no doubt made myself very unpopular with all those millions of Coelho fans), On Chesil Beach is also short but I think that's one of the ones that works. Speaking of McEwan - didn't like Atonement either - thank God we're all different!

by John Glassco On Chesil Beach was one of my favorites for 2007. From what I read in advance, I didn't expect to like it, but it haunted me for weeks after I finished it. Atonement was my first McEwan, and so far, it's been my favorite. I've only read that, Amsterdam, Enduring Love and On Chesil Beach. Enduring Love unsettled me, but kind of in a good way, if that makes sense. I thought On Chesil Beach was very good as well; there were a few things about ... ... it out to paste in my reading journal. Although, as Cariola say, sometimes books "sort of seep in" (and yes, I can see how On Chesil Beach could be one of those, though for me that one hit me right at the end). ... hitting me on the head, and I won't quite realize how much it affected me until I've finished it. That happened to me with On Chesil Beach, which stayed with me for weeks after I read the last page. My top three were:

Not as good as Saturday, but better than On Chesil Beach, in my opinion. As McEwan does, big themes (death, relationships, personal pursuits) are explored through intimate portraits of individual lives.

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, upon which I fall firmly into the "it was fantastic" camp. A gift card and a little bit on the credit card got me three for two at Borders today. On Chesil Beach, What is the What and The Raw Shark Texts. I hope the TBR pile doesn't fall over when I add these three! Finished Blaze last night and now have to decide between On Chesil Beach or The Amber Spyglass. Both very different I know, but I am not sure what I am in the mood for right now. Oh . . . and I am also enjoying in the car Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (which is starting to grow on me) ... ... to when I have schoolwork to do that requires just about the same amount of brain power. But you are yet another person to recommend On Chesil Beach - it was quite a long way down my To-Read pile, but I might promote it now... #10 Finished On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. The man is a genius. What a wonderful, heartbreaking, poignant morality tale. One can be "in the right" and still be wrong. This is so true within marriage. And also true in the larger world. Wonderful, wonderful. I finished On Chesil Beach today and thought it was fantastic. I'm also hoping to finish Foreigner and Kim this week - I seem to keep starting books and I'm actually enjoying all of them, just easily distracted it would seem! ... German Shephards and the acknowledgment of afterlife. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
