#45 My first Ian McEwan novel On Chesil Beach. A quick but incisive read. This is a classic example of a breakdown in communication between two people who love each other dearly. I found it quite sad, in a way.

... But perhaps I'm biased, because I often agree with her. She's the only critic who shares my feelings about Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, for example (here, see especially paragraph 4).

... this was the first McEwan novel I ever read, and he is now one of my favorite writers. I highly recommend Amsterdam, On Chesil Beach, and Saturday, if you haven't read them. Atonement got more praise, but I wasn't as thrilled with it. His early stuff--anything written before Endur ...

There is a lot to like about Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, but not a lot to love. One has to enjoy the quiet competence with which McEwan has put the novel together, the way his prose ticks along, and the scenes in which McEwan shows us what it was like to come of age before "sex began ...

I have read On Chesil Beach - in fact, it was ranked my #1 for 2007. I read Amsterdam a few years ago but can't remember much about it - will have to reread it again some day. I have several of his books on my TBR pile, and look forward to reading them.

... of the books I've read so far this year. I've read a bit of an McEwan, but not Atonement. I thought in his most recent one, On Chesil Beach the author was really coasting on recent successes. ... Love and anything after. Some of his earlier work is a bit too creepy for my taste (incest, sadomasochism, etc.). On Chesil Beach was one of my top reads for 2007, and I also loved Saturday. I'm a bit less enthusiastic about Atonement.

Catching up: #22: On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. It is written by a talented author with a sure hand. That being said, this book irritated me in many ways. I've seen a lot of rave reviews for it, but I agree with one LT reviewer who wrote that this book is a waste of McEwan's (very real) ...

On Chesil Beach was one of my favorites for 2007. From what I read in advance, I didn't expect to like it, but it haunted me for weeks after I finished it.

Atonement was my first McEwan, and so far, it's been my favorite. I've only read that, Amsterdam, Enduring Love and On Chesil Beach. Enduring Love unsettled me, but kind of in a good way, if that makes sense. I thought On Chesil Beach was very good as well; there were a few things about ...

... really enjoyed. Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges, which I think I've probably done enough raving about already.... On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, upon which I fall firmly into the "it was fantastic" camp.

A gift card and a little bit on the credit card got me three for two at Borders today. On Chesil Beach, What is the What and The Raw Shark Texts. I hope the TBR pile doesn't fall over when I add these three!

#10 Finished On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. The man is a genius. What a wonderful, heartbreaking, poignant morality tale. One can be "in the right" and still be wrong. This is so true within marriage. And also true in the larger world. Wonderful, wonderful.

I finished On Chesil Beach today and thought it was fantastic. I'm also hoping to finish Foreigner and Kim this week - I seem to keep starting books and I'm actually enjoying all of them, just easily distracted it would seem!
