... book for this year but I wouldn't consider it a clunker. Plus, no clunker can beat my clunker from last year: the terrible On Chesil Beach.

... this book although I shall warn you that it's advisable to start it early in the morning and not late at night... 149. On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan This was a pretty random "hmm looks interesting" read. I borrowed the book off my boyfriend who bought it for his modern lit reading list and ...

On Chesil Beach - Terrible waste of time this book. Oh look. He pre-ejaculated in the girls hand. She wasn't ready for that. Neither one was ready for it. Just dumb ignorant kids. I agree with un-recommending this one, but not because I didn't like it (I did). I just don't see it as ...

I borrowed my boyfriend's copy of On Chesil Beach last night and I will probably finish that later tonight it's pretty good so far although it is one of those enigmatic "what's it really trying to say?" books.

For English LTers, can you just remind us how old that makes your daughter? I'm guessing 16-ish? If I'm right then she has some great books to choose from and I would especially recommend Things Fall Apart, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The House of Spirits, Of Love and Shadows, Pride and Preju ...

#45: I have never read that one by McEwan, so I cannot comment on it. I have read On Chesil Beach, which to me, was OK, but nothing earth-shattering. I really liked his Saturday, one of my memorable reads for last year, but The Child in Time was not up to that standard. I have authors, ...

KimB in 50 Book Challenge : On the way to 50 (Aug 13, 2009, 8:14am)

We seem to have similar reading tastes. I really loved Bel Canto but was a bit underwhelmed by On Chesil Beach. I'll have to check out those ones that I haven't read yet from your list of favs. I've just finished Blood of Flowers which reminded me a bit of The Lady and the unicorn ...

25. On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

... it's very quirky. I think it was the first McEwan that I ever read, and it got me hooked. My favorites are Saturday and On Chesil Beach. I didn't expect to like the latter, based on reviews I read beforehand. But it was one of those books that just stuck with me for a long time after I ...

I think Chesil Beach is his best that I have read - am not sure where I would list Saturday, Atonement. Amsterdam, and A Child in Time which I have also read. I need to read Amsterdam again, as it has been a few years and I can't remember much of it! I have Enduring Love but it might ...

I liked Black Dogs...but I also liked On Chesil Beach and Saturday, which a number of readers were not fond of. Amsterdam is my least favorite McEwan novel so far.

... a way that felt designed to be literary moreso than either plausible or realistic to the story already given. (Those were On Chesil Beach and Atonement by the way). In any case, I'll be very curious to see what conclusion you come to about this one's ending!

FINISHED BOOK #33 On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. Story of a couple on their wedding night. Hmmm, hard to review this one without spoiling the ending. It was an interesting story, but with way too many British references for me to appreciate. This novel is about that moment in your life ...

Have you read Saturday or On Chesil Beach? Those are my two favorite McEwan's. He should be due for another new book soon.

... get. After I get through that list of 10, I will make another list. This has to work! One of the books on my top 10 is On Chesil Beach which I see you enjoyed.

... much of a black hole at the moment! Just can't get the motivation to read something I *must* read right now.) I thought On Chesil Beach was rather a minor work, but not bad. It did help that I saw Ian McEwan talk at the Opera House soon after it came out (thanks for the ticket, jubby!!!!! ...

... meandering plot (or lack thereof). Thanks to a rare bout of insomnia last night, I'm halfway through Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach. I'd heard fairly negative reviews on it, but it's certainly not what I was expecting, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

Hi porch_reader, Yes I like McEwan too, especially Atonement, but I remember reviewing On Chesil Beach when it was first released and I felt like the only one saying it was mediocre meanwhile everyone else was going on about how fantastic it was. 27. Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen by Syrie ...

... at the end of the year, it won my award for "I Felt Like I Should Have Liked It, but I Didn't." I wasn't a huge fan of On Chesil Beach either (although I usually like McEwan). But Good Omens is moving up on my TBR list, so I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

... you still don't know who are, you still aren't honest with yourself. I think it's a crap genre myself. GeoffWyss in Literary Snobs : That 10% (Jun 14, 2009, 12:37pm)

Atonement, Ian MacEwan. Can't recommend Saturday or Amsterdam at all, nor the excerpts of On Chesil Beach I read, but Atonement is an entirely different thing. Beautifullly written (by which I do NOT mean florid and overwritten, as we were discussing in the other thread)--MacEwan in ...

... and his prose, while straightforward, is subtle and full of imagery and despair. If you have read Atonement or Chesil Beach and liked them, you will appreciate this one as well.

... very intelligent and very well written and eventhough it's a breath by breath account it held my interest far better than On Chesil beach did. I think the ending is a bit out-there, but I think there had to be a climax in the book and that was just the one that McEwan came up with. It's a ...

Hi pj77...no, I haven't read any other McEwan books yet but have several on the TBR. I'd like to read On Chesil Beach and Saturday sometime. I've seen mixed reviews of both but I've also seen a few poor reviews of Atonement so...to each their own! I'll let you know if I get to either of these ...

ON CHESIL BEACH. Done. Should have completed it in two sittings at the most and I'm an arse for dragging it out. Had a couple of projects and just couldn't find the right time to read this book properly. A good read, the characters' innocence, lack of experience really made one wince ...

Well, you know what I thought of On Chesil Beach. Worth reading but McEwan's getting very samey these days.

That's my favorite PKD. Enjoy, mon. Think it's ON CHESIL BEACH next for me. My wife finished it last week and said the couple in the book infuriated her. She gave the novel high marks so I'm looking forward to it--its brevity appeals to me as well...

I think On Chesil Beach is very good, but soooo inhibited and English - set in the days when those words were synonymous.

... review for you, Sales-y, but I think the quality of mercy in a critic is a good thing, don't you? I'm curious about ON CHESIL BEACH--like you, I've found the last couple of McEwan books on the dry side. His early novels were dark and macabre and I quite liked them. But I'm willing to ...

... by presenting intimate portraits of individuals. Enduring Love was another good one, in my opinion. I've also read On Chesil Beach - that was my first McEwan - but it wasn't my favorite. I haven't read any of his very early books.

Glad you enjoyed Atonement! I've read McEwan's On Chesil Beach and Black Dogs; both are good, Black Dogs is better, but neither is as good as Atonement, IMHO. I'm sure other people will have more to recommend, but honestly, I don't think that you can go wrong with any of them!

theaelizabet, you mentioned On Chesil Beach on my thread. Well I just finished reading it. I think I enjoyed it but was also a little disappointed if that makes sense. I like his writing and it was very well captured, but it was so short! The last section especially felt a little like he'd ...

Hi billiejean, I think it will be at least ages before I read another one! 9. On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan (a christmas gift) - Is it just me or is this a bit short? I did enjoy it, and it captures the lack of communication and understanding between the couple very well, but I couldn't help ...

... recently some shorter to short works. The longer ones present a more intensely drawn society with many parts. I've not read Chesil Beach but my guess is there's not much social construction gone into it, if it can be read in an hour. If that's the kind of thing you wish to read, suggest it ...

It's a fair question but On Chesil Beach presents the opposite problem - it takes an hour tops to read so it's probably not quite meaty enough for a monthly read. Also, I think one of the benefits of the club is that it encourages you to read things that are possibly a little foreboding or that ...

:) You're right, I'm no prude. I'm one of those who actually LIKED On Chesil Beach. It was full of sexual details--but those were essential to make the point of the novel and to develop the characters. In Blindspot, it was so obviously meant to titillate, and both the promising story and ...

Hi Rebeki, I read On Chesil Beach recently as well and was kind of on the fence about it. My first Ian McEwan and I have every intention of reading more of his work, so obviously I didn't dislike it. I'm also interested in getting into Joan Didion's writing but would rather start ...

3. On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. For a book of such short length, I took an age to read this. I will readily admit to being left cold by McEwan's style in general, but I'd read so much about this and heard such positive buzz, that I had higher hopes. While I can appreciate a master of his ...

I also just finished On Chesil Beach and really enjoyed it. Part of the thing is that it took place in a time and location where something like that would have not been unlikely. I was also quite taken with McEwan's use of language. I guess that's why there are so many books, so that we can ...

I was a little underwhelmed by On Chesil Beach. On Chesil Beach was one of my favorites for 2007. From what I read in advance, I didn't expect to like it, but it haunted me for weeks after I finished it.

Atonement was my first McEwan, and so far, it's been my favorite. I've only read that, Amsterdam, Enduring Love and On Chesil Beach. Enduring Love unsettled me, but kind of in a good way, if that makes sense. I thought On Chesil Beach was very good as well; there were a few things about ...

#10 Finished On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. The man is a genius. What a wonderful, heartbreaking, poignant morality tale. One can be "in the right" and still be wrong. This is so true within marriage. And also true in the larger world. Wonderful, wonderful.

I finished On Chesil Beach today and thought it was fantastic. I'm also hoping to finish Foreigner and Kim this week - I seem to keep starting books and I'm actually enjoying all of them, just easily distracted it would seem!

Here's another vote for On Chesil Beach - think it was my favourite for 2007. I started an Augusten Burroughs book (not Running With Scissors) but gave up after 3 or 4 pages - just not my taste. Atonement by Ian McEwan will be on my list for early 2008.

On Chesil Beach was one of my favorites this year. No, there wasn't a lot of action; but I tend to like introspective books. This one stayed with me for a long, long time after I finished it.

Here's another vote for Gilead - I nearly gave up on it, but was eventually drawn into the story. And a vote for On Chesil Beach - to me, a perfect novel.

Running with Scissors was my least-favorite book of last year. At least it was short. I really liked On Chesil Beach, though--not McEwan's best, but still pretty good.

Gilead--I didn't like it either but it wasn't my worst read this year. That had to be Running With Scissors or On Chesil Beach. I know many others loved On Chesil Beach. But I just thought it was slow and boring.

#46 I didn't read the excerpt you mention. There were certain parts of On Chesil Beach that raised an 'ick factor,' if you will, as I read it. But that was what made my response to the ending all the more surprising.

... Bones. I really disliked it when I first read it, but re-read it a couple years later and enjoyed it. So I might like On Chesil Beach if I end up re-reading it in maybe a year or two. Sometimes its just what mood you are in that can sway you on a book.

... stand it. Tipperary as with others listed above a huge disappointment as well. I too could not finish it. And lastly On Chesil Beach was painfully boring and I cannot imagine why all the hype.

69) On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan (review)

#181 Loved On Chesil Beach--although I didn't expect to like it, based on reviews I read beforehand. I'm a big McEwan fan--but not a fan of Atonement. However, I'm looking forward to the movie version.

I just finished On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. I've always found that Ian McEwan is one of those writers I think I should enjoy reading more than I actually do, but I have to say that I found myself really liking this novella. Maybe I like him better in small doses. Last night I started ...

I forgot to mention that I finished On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. I love his prose style and there were some delightfully crafted passages (a true artist!) but I admit to being a bit impatient with the story. Very good, but I'll not rave about it (it's no Atonement, if you know what I mean).
