I know that this is just a short story released for World Book Day, but it's a bit of a disappointment.

Firstly, the story only focuses on Connor. It makes little reference to Grace or most of the other characters from the novels and does not entirely stand on its own - many characters from the novels are name dropped but never appear and the ending won't really mean anything to the reader if they're not already familiar with the character of the Pirate Captain from the novels.

As a story, it's also kind of weak. It takes forever to get going and then kind of peters out, leaving the characters with convenient amnesia to ensure that it will never be referenced in the main series.

I think it should also be noted that this book does not tie in with the series continuity very well. Although it sits between the first and second book, there are inconsistencies between the start of this one and the end of the first novel (the sudden appearance of Jez and the situation of Sidorio).

All in all, the story was not all that geared towards newcomers and yet offered nothing new for those who have read the first book. ( )

It does give you a lot more info about the books itself.. should definitely read it.. the other side of the story sort of thing.. But i really like it :) not as much as the actual story though ( )

This is a World Book Day quickie read (just 69 pages) and serves as a light-hearted aside from the Vampirates series. Conner, Bart and Jez take a break from life aboard The Diablo and spend their 48 hours of shore leave making lots of friends, and quite a few enemies.

As fun, comic, and fraught with mild peril as the rest of the Vampirates books. ( )
