the author of this wonderful little book for the dwindling number of truly literate japanese won an essay prize that gained him some low-paying columns, but he really deserves more, as he once wrote that i deserved more for twenty years of finding good books and correcting their translations in japan -- it is nice to read essayists and poets complaining for themselves in old England, for this author (tsurugaya-san, not me)never complains, as he worked full time for a top publisher as an editor for thirty years before going off on his own and is a humble guy for a bunkajin (文化人). If you read Japanese and like essays . . .

The title alludes to a Chinese parable AND to a palimpset. The author is chief editor for editions Papyrus and an amateur scholar in the best sense of the word. A chapter on silent reading includes a description of various ways pages are moved by fingers, which mentions me by name. I never knew I was an example until I received the book.
