Het selecteren van duizend huizen is bepaald geen sinecure, en Simon Jenkins verdient daarin alleen al alle lof. Ter vergelijking: voor het boek Leven in toen uit 2001 werden honderd Nederlandse historische interieurs geselecteerd, en dat over een korter tijdsbestek (vanaf ca. 1600), en bovendien werd de selectie gemaakt door een heel team van auteurs.
Jammer genoeg blijft de verantwoording van Jenkins keuze beperkt tot drie pagina's tekst. Belangrijk is wel dat hij de toegankelijkheid een grote rol laat spelen; geheel ontoegankelijke huizen komen dus niet in het boek voor.
Verder valt het te betreuren dat het boek enkel een persoons- en een plaatsnamenregister kent. Een register op functie, periode en huidig gebruik zouden een welkome aanvulling zijn. ( )
