For those who enjoy the elderly, busybody, spinster sleuth, Jane Edwards certainly fits the bill. She lives with her daft sister and helpless brother somewhere in the American Midwest during the Second World War. This family was made for genteel poverty, but when brother Arthur decides to be patriotic and go work in a munitions factory, Jane is concerned. When a murder and fire rock the plant, Arthur becomes a prime suspect and Jane fears a spy. What follows is a full-busybody style investigation, all over town.

I generally enjoy cozy mysteries, but this one read like a mystery that desperately wanted to be English, but was not. Russell is apparently the mother of the American cozy, but I didn't feel like this book had a fully articulated American flavor to it. It reads like an English imitator, which satisfies neither the desire for an English cozy, nor an American one. ( )

Jane Amanda Edwards, is a spinster sleuth who investigates a series of factory sabotages and a murder.
Set in America during the Second World War,there are also spies and secret agents involved.
Edwards could be likened to Christie's Miss Jane Marple, but of a most inferior model. She is also one of the most irritating and annoying amateur detectives that it has been my misfortune to come across,as are the rest of her ghastly family. The best of the household is the dog. ( )
