An overview of the basic elements of graphic design, with an emphasis on design for print--although it's all applicable to design for screens as well. Overall I had some doubts about the organization of the book (I would have put shape and balance and unity together for example) and I felt there is a certain type of design, a sort of homegrown/ironic/hipster style that the author highly values that is somewhat limited.

That said, the book has some excellent exercises, and the information regardless of organization is very sound. The examples are inspiring, if they could be perhaps more varied. The author's exhortation to work out the elements of a design in your mind and on paper with pencils etc... before turning on the computer and letting software constrain your options is, I think, extremely good advice which I wish more college students would take.
