Joan Knechel collected, cooked and documented over 1,400 recipes in her cooking lifetime -- roughly between the 1950s and her passing in 2014. She wanted to write a cookbook, but never got beyond the collecting and cooking stages. Her collection of recipes, in 14 notebooks, numerous community and premium cookbooks and three file card boxes - one inherited from her mother - is a remarkably detailed record of the cooking of four generations of a working Pennsylvania Dutch family in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania in the 20th century.This book presents about 130 of those recipes -- the comfort food and the Pa.
